Tartakovsky announced the new series Wednesday via a pre-recorded video at the Warner Bros. Animation, CNS, Hanna-Barbera studio focus at Annecy.
Genndy Tartakovsky is developing a “Conan the Barbarian” series with Cartoon Network Studios and Prime Video – suggesting the animation great is firmly back in the Warner Bros. fold having spent a few years developing features with Sony, returning earlier this year with a new season of “Primal” on Adult Swim.
The announcement was made at an Annecy Studio Focus of Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, a fixture in the Annecy scene hosted this year by the studios’ president, Sam Register, Hanna-Barbera London head Sarah Fell and WBA senior VP for current series Jay Bastian.
“I’ve been trying to develop ‘Conan’ since 2008, but the world was not ready,” Tartakovsky said via a pre-recorded video at the session. “But now, after Adult Swim’s ‘Samurai Jack’ and ‘Primal,’ it’s prime time for this to come to life,” he went on. “I have been so inspired by the books written by Robert E. Howard, whose work I have a personal connection with. So far I feel super excited. This is the only IP I’ve worked on other than ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars,’ and I think it’s going to be something special.”
Tartakovsky’s returning to Cartoon Network is a big deal, having been one of the foundational voices that formed the studio, developing early shows like “Dexter’s Lab” and “Samurai Jack.” “Primal” has been the creator’s one recent outlet for the action-animation he had become renowned for, opting of late for comedies like “Fixed” and “Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania.” “Conan” could see Genndy let off the leash once again, making this very exciting news for fans.
The other big news from the Studio Focus, as revealed in exclusivity by Variety, was a third “Adventure Time” spin-off series, “Adventure Time: Bubblegum and Marceline.” This follows the continuity set up by “Fiona and Cake” but is further removed from the more episodic “Adventure Time: Side Quests.” Though little else but a logo was shown in the room, the excitement of the Annecy crowd when the announcement was made was palpable.
For the remainder of the panel, the three executives delivered updates on the previously announced “Yokoso Scooby-Doo,” “Foster’s Funtime With Imaginary Friends” and “Supermutant Magic Academy” while screening two episodes of “Adventure Time: Side Quests,” which hits Hulu on June 29.
“Yokoso Scooby-Doo” is an anime interpretation of the series, with Warner electing “Pokémon” studio OLM to help produce it. While Scooby’s iconic design is still intact, Shaggy, voiced by Matthew Lillard, gets a full anime makeover. Footage showed the gang fending off attacks from a sushi monster during a car chase with rapid-fire gags. On working with OLM, Bastian noted: “They really make it feel like an authentic anime series, they know what they’re doing. They made 1,300 episodes and 24 Pokémon movies, so they seem like the right people to trust.”
“Foster’s,” which reboots the 2004 series “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” comes from Hanna-Barbera in collaboration with London studio BlueZoo. The show skews a tad younger than the original, converting the beloved 2D designs into CGI with 2D facial expressions. Multiple clips from the show entertained the Annecy audience, all of which carried the high energy fans would expect.
While footage of “Supermutant Magic Academy” had been shown during a making of on Tuesday at Annecy, a true surprise was the screening of two whole episodes of “Adventure Time: Side Quest.” The executives had little to say, letting the episodes speak for themselves. So much of what “Adventure Time” fans love about it – the fast pace and relentless humor – is paired with some modernizing elements, like more painterly backgrounds and far more heightened facial expressions.
“We love coming here,” Register announced, expressing his appreciation from within the dangerously high Annecy temperatures. “This is the best animation audience in the entire globe — there is no better audience for what we all do and what we all love. So thank you for braving this incredible heat, we really appreciate it.”
