Ohana means family. Family means Lilo & Stitch actress Daveigh Chase will never get left behind or be forgotten.

The actress' boyfriend Roy Hernandez told TMZ June 17 that the former child star—in addition to voicing the titular Lilo in Disney's 2002 animated classic, she played the haunting antagonist Samara Morgan in 2002's anxiety-inducing horror flick The Ring—died a day earlier at the age of 35.

According to Hernandez, Chase had been admitted to a Los Angeles hospital in early June due to malnutrition and, according to the GoFundMe he created prior to her death, had been "diagnosed with meningitis and several serious blood infections."

At the time, he was hoping to be her lifeline, explaining of her dream of a shared home, "All she ever wanted was a place where we could live together, feel safe, and be happy. Now, more than ever, I want to give her that sense of home and peace in her final days."

As he and Chase's loved ones mourn her loss, look back on her all-too-brief life.

The reason we all know that ohana means family, Chase made a splash voicing Lilo—the titular 6-year-old who befriends alien Stitch—in Disney's 2002 animated flick Lilo & Stitch. Four months later, she performed quite the pivot, crawling into the zeitgest (and many viewers' nightmares) as The Ring antagonist Samara Morgan.

Sadly, off-screen, her life was nearly as traumatic as her fame-making role.

In addition to a few legal issues (she was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance in 2018 and released on bail after two hours), "behind the scenes, she’s faced more than her share of hardship," boyfriend Hernandez wrote in the GoFundMe he created before her June 16 death. "After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown LA."

That changed when she crossed paths with Hernandez.

"When we met, I promised to protect her and give her the love and comfort she deserved," he explained, sharing their desire to amass enough funds for a shared home. "Together, we found moments of happiness and hope."

Anyone who has finished The Ring and then immediately consulted their calendar can recall Chase's haunting performance in the psychological thriller that earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain.

Still a tween when she landed the starring gig and her voice part as Lilo, Chase also booked a 32-episode gig as Rhonda Volmer on HBO's Big Love, in addition to appearances on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, ER and Mercy, and booked roles in films such as Spirited Away, Donnie Darko and Beethoven’s 5th.

But, as she told TMZ in 2012, "Independents are my preference." Among her string of indie flicks: 2012's Yellow, 2014's Transference and 2015's Wild in Blue.

According to Chase's boyfriend, she had been admitted to an L.A. hospital in early June after experiencing significant weight loss. There, he detailed in the GoFundMe, "Daveigh was diagnosed with meningitis and several serious blood infections. Her condition has become critical, and the doctors have told me she may not have much time left."

Her health issues led to sepsis, he continued, eventually causing her body to shut down.
