EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Carrick has been upped to a series regular for the second season of The Testaments, Hulu‘s sequel series to hit Margaret Atwood adaptation The Handmaid’s Tale, with Haley Wong joining in the same capacity.
Newcomer Wong is playing Prudence, a dutiful and pregnant wife who will carve out a space for joy, even if doing so risks everything. Carrick plays the equally cold and calculating Commander Judd, who works to further consolidate power in the highest echelons of Gilead, the totalitarian theocracy that overthrew the U.S. government in The Handmaid’s Tale.
Based on Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Testaments is a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead that follows young teens Agnes, dutiful and pious, and Daisy, a new arrival and convert from beyond Gilead’s borders. As they navigate the gilded halls of Aunt Lydia’s elite preparatory school for future wives, a place where obedience is instilled brutally and always with divine justification, their bond becomes the catalyst that will upend their past, their present, and their future.
Chase Infiniti plays Agnes, with Lucy Halliday as Daisy, and Ann Dowd reprising her Handmaid’s Tale role of Aunt Lydia.
The Testaments is created by showrunner Bruce Miller (The Handmaid’s Tale), who exec produces alongside Warren Littlefield, Handmaid’s star Elisabeth Moss, Steve Stark, Shana Stein, Maya Goldsmith, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears and Mike Barker, who also directed the first three episodes and finale of Season 1. The series is produced by MGM Television and 20th Television.
Cast for Season 1, which premiered on Hulu in April, also included Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Birva Pandya and Kira Guloien. Production on Season 2 began last month.
Best known at this point for her work in the theatre, Wong was last seen starring in The Public Theatre’s production of Antigone (This Play I Read In High School), opposite Tony Shalhoub and Celia Keenan-Bolger. Other credits include The Welkin, opposite Sandra Oh, and Indian Princesses — both at The Atlantic Theatre — as well as a starring role in John Proctor Is the Villain at the Huntington Theatre in Boston. She is repped by Buchwald, Circle Management + Production, and Ryan LeVine at Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Carrick is a British-Canadian actor who made the TIFF Rising Star list with his turn in the 2013 Canadian drama Molly Maxwell. He’s since gone on to roles in Alice, Darling opposite Anna Kendrick, the role of Fred Trump Jr. opposite Sebastian Stan in Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice and Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water. Also seen on series including Genius: Picasso, Reign, We Were Liars and Deep Water, he is repped by Oscars Abrams Zimel & Associates, The Way, Canopy Media Partners and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.
