In fact, the Toy Story 5 actor admitted that fatherhood wasn't a milestone he expected to reach before welcoming kids Katherine Allen, 36, with ex Laura Deibel, as well as Elizabeth Allen-Dick, 17, with wife Jane Hajduk. 

"I never really wanted to be a dad," Allen told Us Weekly in an interview published June 10. "I joke about it on stage; I've just never been a real fan of children."

"It was a work in progress," he continued. "My wife says we wish we'd had five kids because you learn on the first two. With Kate, I was gone a lot, so her mom did most of the raising."

For the 72-year-old, life as a girl dad required a bit of a learning curve. When it came to connecting with his daughters, he looked towards what he felt most comfortable leaning into.

"I come from [a family of] seven boys and two girls, and it's a very different world to me with girls," he explained. "I have a different view of what will make a strong woman. The girl stuff I have little interest in—clothing, looks, gossip, and all that."

Instead, Allen—who tied the knot with Hajduk in 2006—focused on teaching them about finances and "learning how to take care of yourself, and that works for boys and girls.”

There have been some frustrations for the Home Improvement alum, however, when it comes to raising daughters.

"Sometimes I don't engage because they don't like to wrestle and they're not really into boy stuff," he told Huffpost in January 2014. "I was around a lot of boys as a kid. My older daughter likes cars a lot because I do, and the young one likes going to my shop and playing with cars."

"But there's no trade-off like the affection of daughters," he emphasized. "They're great. They're just absolutely wonderful."
