Alabama Shakes have announced full details of their upcoming new album ‘I Must Be Dreaming’ – check them out below.
The LP, which is their first in 11 years, is set to land on August 28 via Island Records. You can pre-order it here and view a trailer and the artwork below.
They are also set to share the latest single from their third studio album, ‘I Feel Hope Coming’ this Friday (July 10).
The band – comprised of Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg, and Zac Cockrell – went on hiatus back in 2018, only to return last August with their first new music in 10 years, ‘Another Life’, which saw the band venture further into 1960s British soul and rock.
Earlier this year they followed it up with the political single ‘American Dream‘.
“There’s a double meaning to it,” Howard said of the title of their third studio album. “It could be saying, ‘I must be dreaming, because the world is so fucking crazy right now.’ But it could also mean, ‘I must be dreaming, because the world is so incredibly beautiful.’ Both those things can be true at once.”
Of the forthcoming single, Howard added: “This younger generation makes me feel hopeful because they can see through all the political lies – that song’s about holding onto that hope, and refusing to give up.”
Fogg added: “I’m really happy that song exists. It came from such a joyful moment of collaboration, and exemplifies everything I love about this band being reborn.”
‘I Must Be Dreaming’ artworkRecorded in Nashville at Sound Emporium Studios and Blackbird Studio, the album leans into a “richly textured, psychedelic soul sound while exploring love, mortality, human connection, and the increasingly surreal contradictions of modern life,” according to a press release.
It was produced by the band and producer Shawn Everett who has previously worked with The Killers and is currently working on Brandon Flowers‘ new album ‘Thrasher’.
The record is said to “expand on the fearless musical exploration that defined the band’s landmark sophomore album ‘Sound & Color'”.
Since their hiatus, Howard has released two solo studio albums: 2019’s ‘Jaime‘ and 2024’s ‘What Now‘.
In December 2024, the band reunited for the first time in over seven years at a surprise show in their native Alabama. Howard had been slated to perform the gig as a solo act, but decided to surprise guests by inviting her Alabama Shakes bandmates to the stage.
Then, in January 2025, they shared some photos of themselves in the studio, telling fans they were “working on some exciting stuff!”
They are currently continuing as a three-piece, with former drummer Steve Johnson absent. He was arrested on charges of child abuse in March 2021, but was then dismissed in December 2021.
