Can you believe it has been 15 years since Dance Moms debuted on television?!
In celebration of that milestone anniversary, it’s time to get excited about a new musical inspired by the beloved reality show. The Pyramid: An Unauthorized Dance Moms Musical is currently being developed and the creators need your help to fund the first production of the show.
The Pyramid features an “original story, music and characters set against the heightened world of competitive dance. The production is being developed as a theatrical parody inspired by reality television, dance culture and the passionate fandom that has surrounded Dance Moms for more than a decade.”
The musical follows Christi Lukasiak and her daughter, Chloe, through one chaotic week at the Abby Lee Dance Company. When young Chloe finally claims the top of the pyramid, Christi must decide how far she will go to keep her there. Featuring an all-original score and enough cameos to keep even Dr. Holly guessing, The Pyramid is an unhinged and surprisingly heartfelt look at motherhood, fame, and the terrifying power of wanting the best for your kid.
Dance Moms fans James Stryska, Isabel Grace, Erica Molfetto and Molly Russo have written the original musical and they’ve teamed up with lead producer Logan Clark, who actually worked on the TV show. Logan‘s company The Casting Collective will also spearhead the nationwide search for the cast of the original production. Joining the production as a supervising producer is Tye Blue, who is the Tony-nominated director and co-writer of the hit musical Titanique, which is a parody of the movie Titanic using the songs of Celine Dion. Daisy Theatricals is assisting in the development of the musical.
The idea for the show started after Stryska and Grace went viral with their video that posed the idea, “We think Dance Moms should be a musical.” After millions of views, the idea turned into a full-scale theatrical production.
“Our goal has always been to bring the experience of watching an episode with your friends into a completely new medium,” Stryska, Grace, Molfetto and Russo said. “We’ve packed the show with the kind of moments you would swear came straight out of television while building an entirely new story for the stage.”
The Kickstarter for The Pyramid aims to raise $15,000 to help support the first production of the show. Backer rewards include exclusive merchandise, a digital cast album, early ticket access, rehearsal experiences, VIP production events, and the opportunity to have supporters’ names displayed on a large-scale pyramid installation inside the theater.
Watch the original viral video below. We’re looking forward to seeing this show on stage one day!
