Thursday served as night three of the pop star’s five-show Brooklyn residency on the Eternal Sunshine Tour. “Safety Net,” which landed on Ari’s Positions album in 2020, has been a staple of act III on the setlist, but Ty’s appearance in BK was a first on the trek.
Wearing black leather pants and a matching jacket, Dolla $ign emerged from a door of the house set on stage, drawing a raucous ovation from the crowd. “Tripping, falling, with no safety net,” they duet on the soothing chorus.
The R&B singer gave Grande her flowers before leaving the stage. “The queen, Ari,” he shouted. “Love you, thank you!” The Grammy-winning superstar continued the show with one of her defining anthems, “One Last Time.”
Before wrapping up, Grande declared night three in Brooklyn to be the loudest audience she’s had on the tour so far. She’ll return to the stage for shows on Saturday (July 18) and Sunday night (July 19) at Barclays Center.
Grande explained the origins of the collab during a 2020 interview on the Zach Sang Show, during which she revealed that it started with Ty pulling up to a studio session.
“He walked in and loved what he was hearing, and I was like, ‘Well, this is a perfect time and place for us to do something together.’ And I always wanted to; I’m a big fan and he’s a great guy, so it just happened to work out,” she stated. “I think he just kind of sat down and loved what he was hearing and was like, ‘Let’s do this together.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s great!'”
“Safety Net” marked the pop supernova’s first collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign. The track debuted at No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 following Positions‘ arrival in October 2020.
