Ricky Martin is continuing his acting career with a role in the upcoming movie Hombre al agua, which just had its premiere at the 2026 Venice Film Festival.

The 54-year-old actor made his debut on the festival’s red carpet while joining co-stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Gael Garcia Bernal, who also directed the movie, at the premiere on Sunday (September 6) in Venice, Italy

The guys were also joined by co-stars Esmeralda Pimentel, Debora Nascimento, and Jorge Salinas, as well as Diego Luna.

What is Hombre al agua about?

The festival provided the below synopsis:

Camilo (Bernal), a Cuban lifeguard, saves Mexican businessman Abel (Salinas)from drowning. Grateful, Abel brings Camilo to Mexico, where he marries Abel’s daughter, Juana, and they have a child. But Camilo soon discovers his new life is part of Abel’s Machiavellian plan of manipulation and control. With his world collapsing, Camilo must uncover the plot and take control of his destiny. Will he find a way out, or remain trapped in the power game?

In a statement, Gael said that, “‘Hombre al Agua’ is the term used when somebody falls from a ship into the water. This term should be shouted, loudly and repeatedly, by someone on board, pointing out where the person that fell is in order to rescue them.”

Ricky Martin’s casting was kept secret until two weeks ago!

Gael Garcia Bernal recently opened up about Ricky‘s casting in a chat with Deadline just a couple weeks ago.

Ricky was one of those wonderful accidents. He was the first person I imagined for the role, but it seemed like such a crazy, almost impossible idea that I kept his name to myself for most of the development process.

The part only required one day of shooting, so we kept saying, “We’ll find someone.” Then, shortly before we started shooting, I managed to get his number and called him. Before I had even really explained the project, he said, “Whatever you want.”

Ricky came in with an enormous generosity, completely embraced the spirit of the film, understood the humor of the character, and became one of the film’s strongest supporters. His involvement as an executive producer grew very naturally out of that enthusiasm.

This is Ricky‘s first fully Spanish-language on-screen role in more than two decades. He most recently appeared in the TV shows Palm Royale and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

The cast also attended a photo call that day!

Ricky stepped out in a Giorgio Armani look for the photo call on Sunday morning.
