ADÉLA is empowering girls around the world while providing a new taste of her highly anticipated debut album, PRIMA.
The 22-year-old Dream Academy contestant-turned-solo superstar just premiered her new song “Ain’t in LA,” featured as the closing track of the upcoming record, due out on September 4. (Pre-order here.)
The accompanying Fred Gervais-directed music video shot in her hometown of Bratislava.
She was inspired to write the song after a visit back home after seeing photos of her mother at 18 posing in front of a wall plastered with pop culture imagery, according to an official release.
What is the inspiration behind “Ain’t in LA”?
“My grandfather smuggled the posters in from Germany. It made me think, ‘There are so many beautiful girls with dreams who will never get their flowers like my mom’. I wrote this for her and the billion other bitches who are probably cooler than me,” she said in a statement.
“Maybe tonight, we don’t gotta run away / It’s all a lie, the baddest bitches ain’t in L.A.? / Enjoy the ride, I know that you might wanna escape / It’s all a lie, the baddest bitches ain’t in L.A.?,” she declares on the song.
The singer also premiered the song live while opening for Demi Lovato on tour, and provided more insight into the meaning of the song during a performance.
“I moved to LA four years ago, but I’m originally from Slovakia, which is, like, a really tiny country in central Europe,” she said as captured in fan footage.
“And I really love living in LA; I actually think it’s a really great place, and I have amazing friends here and a home here. But I wrote this next song…I was thinking about how LA is what it is because of all the immigrants, just like myself, and all the transplants from all the other states too in the US,” she continued.
What has ADÉLA said about her debut album?
“I want this album to sound exactly like a 22-year-old girl. I tried to express both sides. I mixed the hard with the soft, the vulnerable with the swag of it all, the muscular beats with the feminine energy. I did exactly what I wanted to,” she said in a statement.
What is the meaning of PRIMA?
“PRIMA means ‘first’, which is perfect since this is my debut. Being a prima ballerina means you’re the top dog or the best ballerina in the house. It’s a term of endearment in the ballerina community. I’m trying to be the prima ballerina of pop, and this is my first step to achieve that.”
