The 42-year-old CEO of Meta is facing criticism after a small cruise ship in Southeast Alaska came to the rescue of a small boat that ran out of fuel after the yacht owned by the tech giant allegedly ignored a call for help.
Why Is Mark Zuckerberg Facing Backlash?
Cruise passenger Michael Love documented the experience on Bluesky, and said the cruise passengers all booed upon hearing the news.
“I’m on a small-ship Alaska cruise with my son; our boat rescued a stranded vessel last night and apparently we did that after the Coast Guard radioed Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht – which was closer – and they repeatedly refused to respond. (There was near unanimous booing when the captain announced this),” he wrote.
The $300 million Launchpad yacht slowed to a halt as the UnCruise Adventures boat, Wilderness Legacy, went around the giant vessel, stopped at the apparent site of the stranded boat and towed it to shelter, via tracking services analyzed by the Alaskan Beacon.
What the Coast Guard Said
A rep for the Coast Guard confirmed: “At approximately 9:56 p.m., the Coast Guard determined they were not in distress and issued a marine assistance request broadcast on their behalf.”
Mark Zuckerberg’s Spokesperson Responds
A spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg emailed a statement to the Alaskan Beacon: “Mark and his family were not on board at the time of the incident. As the Coast Guard noted, the boat was not in distress, and by the time the crew reviewed the Coast Guard contact on a different radio channel from the one they were operating on, the assist was already underway. We’re grateful all parties are safe.”
Mark recently told his company’s employees that AI is the “most consequential technology of our lifetimes” amid thousands of layoffs at Meta.
