Jay-Z is ready for the hard knock truth when it comes to his new project.
But the Grammy winner—who shares kids Blue Ivy, 14, as well as 9-year-old twins Rumi and Sir with Beyoncé—admitted he feels a bit shy about showing his loved ones his upcoming docuseries JAY-Z in 8.
“I'm really excited,” Jay-Z exclusively told E! News at the world premiere of JAY-Z in 8 in New York City Sept 13. “They know these things. We talk all the time. It'll be fascinating to see on a big screen and at times, I know it'll be, like, cringe.”
“You know, when you put yourself out there like that,” he added, “you get embarrassed but it's honest, and it's a beautiful piece. So, I'm very proud of it.”
In the eight-part documentary series, which premieres on HBO and Max on September 18, the music mogul (born Shawn Carter) sits down with legendary producer Rick Rubin to look back on his life and 30-year music career.
Though the “Love All” rapper shared he “didn’t learn much” about himself while working on the project, he was able to see his life from a different point of view.
“You become more resolved in your beliefs and the core of the things that you believe in because looking back,” the 56-year-old explained. “I wrote these things in '96 and you know these things have come to fruition now and so it affirms the things that you believe."
As for why the timing was just right to release the project? Well, that’s thanks to the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt, which changed the rap game forever following its 1996 release.
“Two or three years ago, we shot this, and it's just all aligned [with what’s] happening right now,” he said. “We didn't plan on it being part of a 30-year celebration. We were just, you know, creating a piece that we both believed in, and it just so happened it all lined up.”
The docuseries comes in the middle of the “Otis” rapper’s Jay-Z 30 Tour, an eight-show concert series that kicked off in his native New York.
And while he may have some nerves about his family watching Jay-Z in 8, they put their love on top for the “Empire State of Mind” rapper during his performance at Yankee Stadium July 10.
After all, both Blue Ivy and Beyoncé made surprise appearances onstage. And before exiting the stage, the “Crazy in Love” singer gave her husband a tender kiss, adding, “I love you so much.”

Beyoncé featured daughter Rumi Carter on her new country album Cowboy Carter.
"Protector," the fourth song on the project, begins with Rumi asking, "Mom, can I hear the lullaby, please?" The clip leads into an acoustic ballad reflecting on her deep love for her children.
While pregnant with her twins, the award-winning singer gave an incredible performance at the 2017 Grammys. It's safe to say Rumi and Sir Carter had the best seats in the house!
A month after welcoming her twins, the proud mom took to Instagram to gush over the babies. She wrote, "Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today."
In July 2022, Beyoncé thanked her kids ahead of her Renaissance album release.
