Paul Avery, best known for his role as bartender Hughie on All My Children, has sadly passed away.
The veteran actor died this week at the age of 81 in a house fire, which also killed his wife Sheila.
WFMZ reports that the fire happened on early Tuesday morning (June 16) at their home in Blairstown, New Jersey. Firefighters arrived at the house just before 1am and pulled the couple out of the house. They were in critical condition and both died shortly after.
The couple’s son Kyle Avery confirmed the news in a Facebook tribute.
I’m devastated to share that our parents, Paul and Sheila Garry Avery, passed away early this morning. We loved them so much, and they loved us so much, and nobody ever had to wonder if that was so. We’re grateful to the Blairstown Fire Department for their efforts. Service plans to follow.
Paul appeared on All My Children for over a decade, beginning in the 1980s. He also appeared in the 1978 movie Superman, plus episodes of Three’s Company and Soap. Later in life, he became the executive editor of the Ridge View Echo and was also a pilot.
We send our thoughts and condolences to the Avery family during this difficult time.
