One Grand Theft Auto modder has created a way for players to hop between games using portals.
Yesterday (July 21) modder Dryxio uploaded a brief video to YouTube that showcased his latest creation – a way to jump between different Grand Theft Auto games that are running concurrently.
The mod features three real-time portals that connect San Andreas, Vice City and Liberty City. Walking through a portal swaps which engine has control while the others keep running. “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Vice City and GTA 3 are all running live inside the same process. Bullets pass through, NPCs and police react natively, and every portal can be crossed into the same persistent world with no loading screen,” they explained. “Each game keeps its own saves, missions and settings and each world continues running its own AI, traffic and physics in real time.”
The mod isn’t out yet but Dryxio has told fans to follow his Github page for news on a full release.
The mod comes ahead of the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is due to release November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S but Nintendo Switch 2 and PC versions of the game still don’t have a release date.
According to video game business analyst Ben Thompson, Grand Theft Auto 6 is the “last great game” we’ll get before AI tools take over development. “It is the pinnacle of AAA craftsmanship. Years and years and years of blood, sweat and tears. I feel compelled to buy GTA 6, just in honour of it existing,” he explained. “Even if I don’t know if I’m ever going to play it, I’d be happy to pay $200. $80 is ridiculous. They should charge more.”
Strauss Zelnick, boss of publisher Take-Two Interactive, is expecting people to bunk off work to play GTA 6 on launch day. However, some indie stores are boycotting the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 due to the lack of a proper physical release. Instead of a disc, Rockstar is selling a code in a box. Other fans aren’t happy that several in-game stores are locked behind a $20 paywall.
In other news, after a successful stint on VR consoles orchestral rhythm game Maestro is coming to Nintendo Switch consoles later this year.
