Video game genius and avid film lover Hideo Kojima has explained that he wants to die in a cinema, just before the movie starts.

Yesterday (July 21), Kojima shared a snippet of his appearance at a film festival earlier this month where he spoke about where he’d most want to die.

“I’m someone who’s always thought that when I die, I want to die in a movie theater,” he explained (translated by Genki_JPN). “I like the time before the movie starts the best. Enter the movie theater, the lights turn off, the commercials and trailers play, then just before the movie starts is when I want to pass away.”

Kojima might be best known for beloved video game franchises Metal Gear and Death Stranding, but he often uses his X account to review movies. Last year, he voiced a mole in the Japanese edition of Zootopia 2.

A new Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation is currently in the works from Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, though Kojima isn’t involved. Instead, he’s currently helping out with A24’s live-action Death Stranding movie. “I need to kind of guide the project but I can’t direct it myself, schedule-wise. I’ll let them work on it without too much of my input, because that might get in their way,” he explained. “I don’t want to go in and ask them to make a bunch of changes; that’s not cool. I have to trust these people.”

He’s also teaming up with horror icon Jordan Peele for his upcoming game ‘OD’. Last year, Kojima said the horror anthology that will be created by the “avengers” of the directing world with Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘ Sophia Lillis and Madonna collaborator Udo Kier starring as the three main characters. “I wanted to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached,” Kojima added earlier this year. “It’s a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible.”

At the start of 2025, Kojima admitted that he didn’t know how much longer he’d be making games for. “At this age, I can’t help but think about how much longer I’ll be able to stay ‘creative’,” the then-61-year-old wrote on social media.

In other news, one Grand Theft Auto modder has created a way for players to hop between different games using portals.
