The late Euphoria star Eric Dane praised the HBO show as “a wonderful experience” in one of his final recorded interviews.
The drama followed a group of young people navigating addiction, relationships and identity, with Dane playing Cal Jacobs, the closeted and deeply troubled father of Jacob Elordi’s Nate.
Dane died in February at the age of 53 following complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but before he passed away, he gave an interview that has now been included in the new documentary Euphoria: A Look Back.
Discussing his time on the series, he said that the experience had been “at times challenging”, but added that “the challenges were taken as opportunities”.
“It’s been such a wonderful experience,” he continued, describing Euphoria as “the most profound experience” of his acting career.
Series creator Sam Levinson also paid tribute to Dane in the documentary, calling him “a wonderful human being” and “a wonderful actor”.
“He showed up every day with grace and dignity,” Levinson added.
Dane appeared throughout the show’s third and final season, which was filmed after he announced in April 2025 that he had been diagnosed with ALS, a rare and terminal neurological condition that progressively affects the nerve cells controlling voluntary movement.
At the time of his diagnosis, Dane said he felt “fortunate” to be able to continue working and confirmed that he would return to the Euphoria set the following week.
Dane was also widely known for playing Dr Mark Sloan, nicknamed ‘McSteamy’, in Grey’s Anatomy. His other credits included Charmed, Marley & Me, X-Men: The Last Stand, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die and Brilliant Minds.
The third-season premiere of Euphoria paid tribute to Dane, Angus Cloud and executive producer Kevin Turen with individual ‘In Memoriam’ title cards. Cloud, who played drug dealer Fezco in the show’s first two seasons, died from an accidental overdose in July 2023 aged 25. Turen died later that year aged 44.
Levinson previously said of Dane’s death: “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend. Working with him was an honour. Being his friend was a gift.”
Euphoria concluded with its third-season finale on May 31. Levinson later confirmed that the show would not return for a fourth season, saying its conclusion “felt like the honest ending”.
Euphoria: A Look Back, featuring interviews with the show’s cast and crew alongside footage from across its three seasons, is available to stream now on HBO Max.
Elsewhere, Elordi recently reflected on filming one of Nate’s most physically demanding storylines, recalling “six weeks of getting beat by a seven-foot guy”.
