A24’s highest grossing movie at the domestic and global box office, Backrooms, is coming home on Tuesday, July 14 via digital sales and rentals.
The movie from YouTube content creator Kane Parsons shocked many, initially tracking around a $20M-$30M opening before becoming A24’s biggest opening ever at $81.4M domestic and the studio’s top grossing pic both stateside ($192.3M) and global with well north of $361M.
Backrooms is still racking up money, ranking 7th at the weekly B.O. with $5.2M in its sixth frame at 2,079 theaters stateside. Last weekend, A24 released a version of the Easter Egg-filled movie with 16 minutes of extra footage.
The movie was co-produced by Blumhouse, 21 Laps, and co-financed and produced by Chernin Entertainment. Parsons was being courted by Hollywood to make Backrooms while he was a teenager.
Together with Curry Barker’s Obsession, Backrooms paved a way for YouTube genre filmmakers at the box office, and also reinvigorated Gen Alpha and Gen Z moviegoers. Focus Features just announced that Obsession is streaming on Peacock on Friday, July 17. Both thrifty budgeted titles, Obsession and Backrooms, defied Hollywood expectations at the box office, outgrossing once though of tried-and-true franchises, such as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu ($170M domestic, $340M domestic) and superhero movies like Supergirl ($62.4M domestic, $108M WW current).
