The creator of House of the Dragon is responding to backlash over some of the changes made from the book “Fire & Blood” to the HBO Max adaptation.
If you don’t know, the season three finale aired this past Sunday, and there were some significant changes.
House of the Dragon’s season three finale made several major changes from the book
Fans are noting some major changes from George R.R. Martin‘s original work.
For example, in “Fire & Blood,” Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White earn their infamous reputation as the “Two Betrayers” when they turn against Rhaenyra during the chaos at Tumbleton. However, in House of the Dragon, Ulf goes completely rogue on his own.
One of the most significant changes from “Fire & Blood” comes in how Rhaenyra handles the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy. The book never has her reveal the prophecy publicly or identify herself as the prophesied “Prince That Was Promised,” but the TV series gives her a public declaration that connects her claim to the throne directly to the coming threat from the North.
Creator Ryan Condal spoke out about the “Fire & Blood” changes
“For me, necessary changes in the translation of something from one medium to another seem less controversial. People have to understand that I have 200 pages of prose to work with to make four seasons of television. And this stuff, believe me, keeps me up at night more than anybody,” Ryan told Esquire.
“But between season 2 and season 3, I just realized that I really can’t live like this anymore—just worrying about every little thing. I have to trust my instincts as somebody who’s read Fire & Blood probably more than anybody else on the planet at this point. And I still regard this adaptation as tremendously faithful to the overall text and the broad story that it is telling, even when there are individual moments that are surprising or different,” he said.
