Silo has returned for its third season, but what happened at the end of season two? Find out below.

Created by Graham Yost and based on Hugh Howey’s novels, the Apple TV sci-fi series is set in a dystopian future where thousands of people live in a vast underground silo, with the outside world believed to be deadly.

The series stars Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette Nichols, an engineer who uncovered some of the silo’s biggest secrets in season one before being sent outside to clean.

The cast also includes Tim Robbins as Bernard Holland, Common as Robert Sims, Harriet Walter as Martha Walker, Chinaza Uche as Paul Billings, Avi Nash as Lukas Kyle and Steve Zahn as Solo.

Season three premiered on Apple TV today (July 3), with new episodes set to arrive weekly until the finale on September 4.

The new season has already received strong reviews from critics, with some praising the show as “one of television’s smartest science-fiction dramas” and “a new standard for what prestige sci-fi can be”.

What happened at the end of Silo season two?

At the end of Silo season two, Juliette made it back to Silo 18, only for the finale to leave her and Bernard trapped in an airlock as flames erupted around them.

After spending the season in Silo 17 with Solo, Juliette learned about the Safeguard, a deadly system that could seemingly pump poison into a silo and kill everyone inside. Realising Silo 18 could be in danger, she repaired her suit and headed back outside.

Inside Silo 18, rebellion had broken out against Bernard, while Juliette’s father, Dr. Pete Nichols, sacrificed himself by manually detonating explosives on the stairs, helping Mechanical gain the upper hand.

Juliette then appeared on the silo’s screens, revealing that she was still alive. Crucially, she held up a warning reading: “NOT SAFE, DO NOT COME OUT”, confirming that while the authorities had lied about many things, the outside world was still deadly.

In the closing moments, Bernard met Juliette at the airlock, seemingly intending to go outside and die. Juliette told him she may know how to disable the Safeguard, but before they could act, the door began to close and fire filled the chamber around them.

The episode then cut away before revealing whether either of them survived.

The finale also jumped back to Washington, D.C. before the silos existed, where journalist Helen Drew met Congressman Daniel Keene and discussed the possibility of a dirty bomb. The scene set up season three’s new timeline, exploring how the silos were created in the first place.
