Two structural support beams on the 21st floor of a 38-story under-construction building in Manhattan started buckling Tuesday morning, triggering a mass evacuation, street closures and a large emergency response, officials say. The building, formerly Pfizer’s global headquarters, is being converted into a 1,500-unit luxury rental complex. It was evacuated, along with neighboring buildings. “At about 8am, FDNY received reports that bricks were falling from a building under construction on E. 42nd St between 2nd and 3rd Avenue,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at an unrelated press conference Tuesday morning. The mayor instructed those in the area to follow the instructions of those on the ground.

“At about 8 am, FDNY received reports that bricks were falling from a building under construction on East 42nd Street between second and Third Avenue. And first responders have found structural issues on the 21st floor. So this is where two structural columns have buckled at this time,” he explained.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the Manhattan high-rise building “has continued to move” and described the situation as “serious” and ongoing. The evacuation zone, or “frozen zone,” has been implemented between 40th and 45th streets, from 1st to 3rd avenues.

“Additionally, multiple cracks and sagging floors were found on the 21st floor. Now, luckily, there have been no injuries to report at this time. All workers are accounted for. The building has been evacuated. A number of tall buildings in the area are also being evacuated at this time. A school with about 400 children has also been evacuated. And as a result of all of this, most of 42nd Street and 43rd Street between first and third Avenues have been shut down to pedestrians and to vehicles. And all of this is a reflection of the fact that our top priority right now is the safety of those who live in this area, the safety of those who work in this area.”

“I believe that those actions are appropriate at this time. At. At this time. It’s minute by minute in terms of their assessments. we will be sure to update the public when we have anything to do so,” he went on to say.

Later in the afternoon, he provided another update.

“The building remains unstable. Since arriving on scene, we have witnessed additional movement in one of the compromised columns. First responders and structural engineers are working closely with the project engineer to develop plans to shore up the impacted floor. If the floor is deemed to be secure, engineers will enter and begin shoring up the building,” he said.

“As we await the arrivals of materials that will stabilize the building, DOB engineers have been investigating with F D N Y. Drones. This is an extremely serious situation, and I’m thankful to our first responders for quickly arriving at the site. And to New Yorkers for reacting calmly and with urgency. I’m grateful to report there have been no injuries at this time and that every worker has been accounted for.”

The buckling NYC high-rise ‘continues to move’ into Tuesday afternoon, officials shared at a press conference just after 12:30 p.m. The Department of Buildings said at least nine neighboring buildings were also evacuated as a precaution. It wasn’t immediately clear how long the evacuations might remain in place. Raw footage from inside, taken by a construction worker, showed crumbling steel beams on the 21st floor. 40th to 45th streets are closed from First to Third Avenues. It’s not clear when the area may reopen or when evacuees can return to their homes. #news #nyc #manhattan

“We have specialized tools that we can watch the building from and see movement even in. In centimeters or fractions of an inch. And since we arrived on the scene and put that in place, we have seen continual movement. It does mean that it is not yet stable. It is still a very serious and dangerous situation. We have a frozen zone and a collapse zone set up. And we are working with the buildings department and the building engineer to make sure that this is safe for all people and for all the workers,” the FDNY Chief of Department added in the conference.

The building is the former Pfizer global headquarters. The 37-story former corporate office is currently undergoing a massive conversion into luxury apartments.
