Emmy Rossum is opening up about her personal life and her career.
The 39-year-old Furious actress got candid in a new interview with Bustle‘s One Nightstand series.
During the chat, she spoke about her training for the critically acclaimed Hulu show, and the resurgence of Shameless among Gen Z. She also talked about the music she loved growing up, her “goth phase,” and attending an actual seance ahead of starring in 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera to prepare for the role.

On the morally complex leads in Furious:
“The juiciest characters and certainly the two female leads here are two sides of the same coin…It’s funny reading the scripts, I was like, ‘Am I really identifying with the serial killer now? Am I hoping she kills all these people?’”
On training with active law enforcement:
“I clearly wasn’t going to become an FBI agent in order to do this show, but I did train with former and current FBI agents and former and current NYPD detectives so that I could really understand what it was like on a cellular level.”
On Shameless finding a second life on social media:
“There are some very much younger people who wouldn’t have even been watching the show when it was on who know it from that meme or that clip…It’s interesting how it’s kind of found a new life that way as well.”
On why Shameless resonated so deeply:
“I think that for a lot of people who grew up in big, messy, chaotic households that may have had substance problems or just emotional chaos or poverty, I think that there are very few shows that resonate in that way.”
On her childhood Spice Girls obsession:
“I had a huge Spice Girls obsession. I was Geri Halliwell. It was probably my first pop culture obsession — that, and Celine Dion concurrently.”
On her 14-year-old goth phase:
“I had a full goth phase when I was about 14 years old. Oh yeah. Very like Wednesday Addams summer…I was very into it and very committed to that being my identity forever.”
On attending a real séance for The Phantom of the Opera:
“I went and had an experience at a spiritualist society, a kind of séance that I went to…and had an experience there that was interesting and surprising and certainly helped give me a concrete memory of something as I was going into shooting that.”
On watching Real Housewives for character research:
“Part of my research was watching a lot of The Real Housewives of Rhode Island, which I would love to say didn’t become an obsession, but I made it all the way through both reunions.”
