There’s a new thriller out on Netflix that fans can’t stop talking about!
On Friday (August 28), the new movie The Whisper Man, starring Adam Scott, Robert De Niro, and Michelle Monaghan was released on the streaming service.
The new serial killer thriller is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Alex North.

What is The Whisper Man about?
Here’s the synopsis, shared by Netflix.
When his eight-year-old son is abducted, a widowed crime writer looks to his estranged father, a retired former police detective, for help, only to discover a connection with the decades-old case of a convicted serial killer known as “The Whisper Man.”
In the movie, Adam plays Tom Kennedy, Robert plays Detective Inspector Pete Willis, Michelle plays Detective Amanda Beck, with Michael Keaton as Frank Carter.
After watching the movie, fans may still have some questions, so we put together an explanation of how The Whisper Man ends, and figured out who the girl in the blue sweater is.

The Whisper Man ending explained
The police discover that Frank Sr.’s son Frank Jr. is the new “Whisper Man,” and has been copying his dad’s killing of children.
As the police canvas everyone in the neighborhood looking for Frank Jr., Amanda happens to knock on the door of a man (played by Owen Teague), who the audience already knows is in fact the one who kidnapped Jake, aka this man is Frank Jr.
After the man introduces himself as a teaching assistant at Jake’s school, Amanda follows him inside for further questioning, not knowing that this is the house where Jake is being held captive.
Meanwhile, Pete visits Frank Sr. in prison again and they make a deal – if Frank Sr. tells him where his son is hiding Jake Kennedy, he will make sure that Frank Jr. ends up in the same prison as his father and he will get his desired “five minutes” alone with his son. It turns out Frank Sr. really wanted to kill his own son, but made due with killing other kids instead. But he still really, really wants to kill Frank Jr.
Pete gets the info on Frank Jr. and texts it to Amanda, who already suspects that the guy she is questioning is Frank Jr. Frank Jr. knows that Amanda knows this and a heated fight breaks out. Amanda ends up shot and injured as Frank Jr. manages to get away with Jake in his car.
Frank Jr. throws the cops off his trail with bad intel, but luckily, thanks to his conversation with Frank Sr., Pete knows where Frank Jr. is taking Jake: the basement of his own house, aka the same place Frank Sr. stashed Tony Smith’s body.
Pete and Tom confront Frank Jr. in the basement where Tom finds Jake, tied up but still alive, in the secret hatch where Tony’s body was. In a struggle that takes place all over the house, Frank Jr. kills Pete. Frank Jr. ends up stepping onto a weak spot on the attic floorboard and falls.
After the fall doesn’t kill Frank Jr., he’s delivered to Frank Sr. in prison for “five minutes alone.” Frank Sr. ends up strangling his son death, just like he always wanted to do.

Who is the girl in the blue sweater?
As he copes with the death of his cancer-ridden mother, Jake insists that his imaginary friend, the girl in the blue sweater, is real. Viewers see the girl many times throughout the movie with Jake, but never hear her speak. Jake also keeps a “Packet of Special Things,” where he keeps photos of his mom.
In the final scene of The Whisper Man, viewers learn that the girl in the blue sweater is none other than Jake’s mom as a little girl.
As Tom is looking through old photos of his dead wife, he comes across a photo of his wife as a little girl, wearing that same blue sweater.
So, can Jake see his mother’s ghost? Or did he just know about the photo of his mom as a child from his “Packet of Special Things” and used that photo as inspiration when picturing his imaginary friend?
Well, according to director James Ashcroft, the girl in the blue sweater is the ghost of Jake’s mom.
“I definitely view the end revelation as the presence and the spirit of [Jake’s] mother has been there the whole time, influencing and guiding events toward this moment of healing—for all of them, not just her son,” Ashcroft told Decider.
He added that before the last “revelation” with the photo, it was meant to be ambiguous whether the girl was a ghost, or just Jake’s imaginary friend.
“We were very conscious of, whenever we employ the use of the imaginary friend,” Ashcroft said. “The question is, ‘Is this a supernatural, other being, or is this a manifestation of psychosis for the young boy?’ We were really trying to walk that line—the tension of that question—so that it could always be a question for the audience.”
“The revelation at the end, we were so passionate about, because it’s about healing. That’s very heartfelt,” he explained. “It’s a male-driven film, the themes being father and son. So we love that this presence of the mother was there so much in the background, in the foreground, moving through the film.”
