Fielder caused a media storm earlier this month at the Telluride Film Festival after it was revealed that he and Lance Oppenheim had made a secret documentary with Elizabeth Holmes.

Before that, the comedian was campaigning to improve pilots’ mental health in the second season of The Rehearsal.

That campaign has now been successful after the Senate just passed the John A. Hauser Mental Health in Aviation Act and the Aviation Medication Transparency Act.

The second season of the HBO series focused on airline safety, specifically related to communication between pilots and co-pilots with Fielder highlighting the issue in a series of rehearsed situations, including the comedian flying a Boeing 737 passenger jet in the finale.

In the show, Fielder wanted to help raise awareness by speaking in front of Congress, but it doesn’t appear that the Nathan For You star made it to the legislature.

The bipartisan bills were introduced by Republican Senator John Hoeven and Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth.

John A. Hauser Mental Health in Aviation Act aims to redress longstanding stigmas surrounding mental health among aviators via increased funding for aeromedical examiners and mental health training. It was named after the student pilot who took his own life in 2021 while training and in a letter to his family made a plea to change the aeromedical system so pilots don’t have to suffer in silence.

Meanwhile, the Aviation Medication Transparency Act seeks to provide aviators and their medical providers with clarity as to which medications can be taken and which cannot.

Last August, in an interview with Deadline at the Writers Guild Foundation’s Sublime Primetime event, Fielder addressed the topic.

“After the show aired, John [Goglia, former National Transportation Safety Board member] texted me and said that a bill that’s been stuck in the House for years about pilot mental health finally went through and was passed, and went to the Senate, and he was talking to the young staffers, and he said, ‘I think the show pushed them to [do it]’. I guess the young people make all the decisions. He’s like, ‘That’s how it works’. Anyway, I don’t know if it did anything, but it was nice to hear,” he said.

Fielder is currently working on the third season of The Rehearsal. HBO chief Casey Bloys told Deadline earlier this month, “[HBO Head of Comedy] Amy Gravitt and Nathan have a very, very good working relationship. He’s got an idea that he’s working on for The Rehearsal.”

While it’s not clear what the idea is yet, internet message boards are obsessed with the idea that Fielder is exploring the U.S. immigration system through the exploits of viral boy-band Boy Throb. Although knowing Fielder, that may well be a red herring.

The Rehearsal is exec produced by Fielder, Eric Notarnicola, Dave Paige, and Christie Smith and Dan McManus with Carrie Kemper as co-exec producer alongside Kris Eber and Adam Locke-Norton is a producer.
