Which Johnny Marr solo track would he rank above classic songs by The Smiths and Electronic? Watch NME’s Blind Ranking video below to find out.

NME caught up with the Smiths icon ahead of his new solo album ‘The Age Of Everything’, which was released last Friday (October 2). During our time with the guitarist, we got him to rank five songs from across his discography in order of greatness, without knowing what track could come up next.

The first track up was the Electronic hit ‘Getting Away With It’, which he said “goes down very very well, even if people are hearing it for the first time”. We then asked Marr how’d he rate the track ‘Spin’, off his new solo record. He acknowledged that “not everybody knows it, but it makes an impression”.

The Smiths’ classic ‘This Charming Man’ was presented to him next: “Obviously it’s very well known, but it goes by so quick.” Marr also said the song for him still acts as a “connection” to his youth: “I can hear the young man who wrote those guitar parts”. Marr deemed his 2014 solo track ‘Easy Money’ a “pretty catchy” song that “goes off bigger than any other at any gig”, and also gave his verdict on The Smiths’ iconic ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’.

“Beautiful song to play. Very proud of it still,” he said, before explaining that he had performed it recently in Liverpool and “it occurred to me that it’s the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ of my generation.”

Elsewhere, the guitarist spoke to NME about his “emphatic” new album ‘The Age Of Everything’, his love of The Cure, Fontaines D.C., and why UK PM Andy Burnham isn’t forbidden from listening to The Smiths. You can check out our full chat with Marr here.

Marr will play one show in Liverpool on November 14, before embarking upon a short tour across South America, including stops in Mexico, São Paulo and Chile. He was due to play his biggest solo headline show later this month at OVO Arena Wembley, though that has now been postponed to a currently unspecified date.
