Cher is taking legal action against her daughter-in-law.
Amid the “Believe” singer’s continued fight to appoint a guardian for son Elijah Blue Allman, 50, the 80-year-old filed a supplemental brief in Los Angeles court August. 28, alleging that his wife Marieangela King-Allman, 39, is only seeking to be Elijah’s conservator for monetary gain.
“The New Hampshire State Hospital, and the rest of the family remain adamantly opposed to Mrs. King-Allman serving given her estrangement from Elijah,” stated the documents obtained by E! News, “as evidenced by the previously pending divorce, her refusal and failure to assist Elijah... while he was struggling before he was arrested in New Hampshire, and/or because the family believes that she is inserting herself back into the picture on a quest for money and/or a bit of fame.”
Per the docs, Cher learned that Elijah—who is currently in custody in a psychiatric hospital in New Hampshire as he faces multiple criminal charges—had “denied Mrs. King-Allman from visiting him three times already.”
There is still dispute over who should be Elijah’s guardian, according to the docs, which said NHSH sought to have Cher and ex-husband Sonny Bono’s son Chaz Bono, 57, take on the role, or appoint Elijah’s half-brother from late father Gregg Allman, Devon Allman, 54.
“The dispute exclusively centers on the identity of the guardian,” the brief stated. “It is an open question as to how long the guardianship will last, and Petitioner is in the process of gathering information on that.”
In response to Cher’s filing, Marieangela told E!, "I can only give you the facts. I am married to Elijah for 13 years, together for 15 years. His mother sent him to boarding school at age 6 & they’ve been estranged his whole life. She abandoned him at boarding school all year round even throughout the holidays. Elijah raised himself. Elijah needs to be surrounded by people who are sober and who support his recovery.”
Marieangela added of Cher—who said in January that she herself has “never done drugs” and doesn’t drink—that the musician is “upset she’s lost control."
Cher doesn’t believe Marieangela should be appointed as conservator because, as the docs state, “Mrs. King-Allman was in the process of divorcing Eljah Allman for many months, and was estranged from him, when Cher initiated this conservatorship proceeding.”
The singer's daughter-in-law is also accused of not helping to provide care for Elijah (who Cher has described as “gravely disabled” and having experienced "drug dependency is at its worst,” per court docs obtained by Page Six).
“Mrs. King-Allman never lifted a finger to help, despite the fact that Mr. Allman was supposedly her spouse,” alleged the brief obtained by E!. “Now that a conservatorship is pending, Mrs. King-Allman clearly sees a financial opportunity to control his income, and she has attempted to seize the opportunity created by his incarceration to try to reinsert herself back into his life.”
Elijah and Marieangela were married in 2013, but she filed for divorce in 2021. That filing was dismissed in February 2024 before Marieangela filed again in April 2025. The second filing was dismissed in June 2026.
The docs added that Elijah’s decision to continue a relationship with Marieangela “is a choice he will hopefully be able to make independently.”
The brief added, “But given her behavior and indifference to his health and living situation over the prior year, she, in no way, should ever be considered as a viable candidate to serve as a court-appointed fiduciary.”
Marieangela responded to Cher’s filing on her Instagram Sept. 2, writing, “As Elijah's wife of 13 years, I love him and want what is best for him, which is a robust and long-term treatment plan.”
“My husband and his mother have been estranged for many years, and she has repeatedly blocked my efforts to get him help,” she continued. “If she takes control as conservator, I believe it would jeopradize [sic] his chances of a hopeful recovery.”
She also wrote in a Sept. 1 post that neither Elijah nor Cher appeared that day for a hearing on the matter, with the case set to continue on Dec. 1.
Cher previously filed for conservatorship over Elijah in December 2023, although she was denied in January 2024 with a judge citing “insufficient evidence,” according to court documents obtained by E! News at the time.
