Jamie Foxx is reflecting on the life-saving support his daughter Corinne Foxx provided him during his 2023 medical emergency.
The 58-year-old actor made a joint appearance with his 32-year-old daughter on Keke Palmer‘s podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, on Tuesday (August 25). During the episode, Jamie said one of his doctors credited Corinne with helping save his life.
The Django Unchained actor revealed the doctor said he might not have survived without Corinne‘s help and that she was quite remarkable in her overall handling of such a scary medical situation.
“He says, ‘Man, your daughter saved your life,’” Jamie recalled. “He talked about Corinne. She saved you. He said, ‘She’s the reason that you’re here.’”
She took charge of the overall situation and her father’s care while the family was under enormous pressure.
In the same episode, Corinne talked about her experience and going into “caretaking mode.”
“When you’re in it, you don’t have time to be scared because your brain overhauls adrenaline,” Corinne said. “You’re just in caretaking mode and you’re never really ready to take care of your parents. You’re never ready for that moment, but when it happened, I was like ‘I got this.’”
She also had to navigate the online speculation surrounding his hospital check-in, noting how it became “scary” on the internet as people came up with all sorts of conspiracy theories, such as the possibility that Jamie was cloned.
“But it also was not my place to ever release his medical information,” she said. “That was the toughest part: just trying to manage that. But it didn’t really matter. They can say whatever they want as long as he’s good.”
What happened to Jamie Foxx?
Jamie fell ill in April 2023 while he was working on Back in Action. He later revealed that he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke and he lost approximately 20 days of memory and initially couldn’t walk after regaining consciousness. He underwent rehabilitation and subsequently returned to work.
Jamie explains why the idea of a ‘second chance’ frustrated him
Jamie found rehabilitation to be frustrating at times and he struggled to understand why the stroke was happening.
“I couldn’t make sense of it, and I remember — the parts I do remember, like the rehab part — was frustrating,” said Jamie. “Cause I remember they said, ‘You got a second chance.’ I said, ‘f— the second chance. What was wrong with my first chance?’”
Humor became an important coping mechanism for him.
“They couldn’t do wellness checks on me,” the Ray star said, “because I only had comedy to lean on. So I was joking all the time.”
He’d often do impressions of other people, such as Denzel Washington and Dave Chappelle.
Nurses reportedly told him he was a “miracle,” saying less than 3% of people who have the same health problem Jamie did did not walk back out of the hospital.
