Netflix will be removing one of its biggest shows from the platform at the end of June.

The streaming platform is home to countless original movies and television shows, but it also licenses the streaming rights to older shows that can sometimes get a second life after millions of fans revisit it with the ease of Netflix at their fingertips.

Starting on June 30, Gilmore Girls will no longer be on Netflix. The official Netflix X account shared the news on Monday (June 15).

“It’s a show? It’s a lifestyle. It’s a religion. We are sorry to say that Gilmore Girls Seasons 1-7 will be leaving Netflix in the US on June 30. Raising a cup of coffee to every fan who visited Stars Hollow with us.”

What will happen to the Gilmore Girls revival series?

Netflix has been the streaming home of Gilmore Girls for many years now, so the news has come as a huge shock to fans, especially since the streamer previously produced the four-part Gilmore Girls revival and there’s been rumors over the years that it might return for more episodes.

The bad news is Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will also probably leave Netflix at some point this year since the original show is owned by Warner Bros. and Netflix only paid for an exclusive 10-year streaming window. If they were unable to extend the deal for the OG series, it seems unlikely they’d be able to do so for the revival either.

Why is Netflix removing Gilmore Girls?

Whenever Netflix streams something that isn’t an original series, there is always an end date in mind, even if it’s not made immediately apparent to subscribers. Netflix only licenses third-party content.

According to What’s On Netflix, this specific date has been rumored for a while. Netflix’s original licensing deal is coming up on its expiration date and apparently they didn’t, or were unable, to reach a new deal with Warner Bros. to continue streaming the show.
