Robert Kelly’s kids are still marching forward alongside their dad.

Nearly a decade after his kids Marion and James—then 4 and 9 months, respectively—went viral for waltzing into the background of his BBC interview, the political science professor shared some “BBC Dad content” of what his kids look like today.

In one picture posted to X Sept. 28, Kelly ate birthday cake with Marion, now 13, and James, 10, as the crew smiled for a selfie. In another snap, James threw up a peace sign as he and his dad went hiking.

Kelly shared another selfie of just Marion, in which he said she is “looking very grown-up.”

Meanwhile, a final photo showed him with his wife Jung-A Kim—who he called “BBC Mom”—at a street festival.

Since the 2017 interview—and its 2020 resurgence during the global COVID-19 pandemic—Kelly has provided a few updates of his kids and their life in Busan, South Korea. 

Last year, he shared pictures from the previous Christmas and thanked the online community for their continued support, writing on X in March 2025, “As always, my wife & I are very grateful for all the kind remarks over the years about our children. Thank you so much.”

But while Kelly has an appreciation for the viral moment now, he initially thought it was “a disaster.” 

“We thought no TV network would ever call us again,” he told The New York Times in 2017. Still, he noted, “My real life punched through the fake cover I had created on television. This is the kind of thing a lot of working parents can relate to.”

As for how Kelly and his wife felt during the immediate aftermath of the viral sensation? 

“It has mostly been fun, and sometimes weird,” he wrote in a 2018 essay for the Lowy Institute. “It can be pretty weird when people regularly photograph you out and about, often without asking, simply because they saw you on television.”

Still, Kelly emphasized, “We were lucky that our 15 minutes of fame were due to something positive.”
