A little over a decade after The Getty Villa completed an eight-year renovation, its sister site, The Getty Center, will undergo what officials today called the most significant modernization project since the Brentwood museum opened in 1997.

The Richard Meier-designed center will close to the public beginning March 15, 2027, and will not reopen until spring 2028 — just in time for a certain global sporting event.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors back in spring 2028, in time to celebrate the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles,” Katherine E. Fleming, president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, said in a statement.

According to Getty officials, the modernization project will include enhancements such as reimagined gallery spaces; improvements to the tram system; a renovated Welcome Hall, with a new cafe bookstore and retail shop; and improved cell phone and Wi-Fi service.

Getty officials said some improvement projects are already underway, with some galleries being closed to accommodate work on the heating/air conditioning system.

During the year-long closure, Getty will open a programming space on Sepulveda Boulevard in a building located across from the center.

The Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades will remain open with normal operating hours during the modernization work at Getty Center. A selection of paintings from the Getty Center will be temporarily displayed at the Getty Villa during the renovation work.
