Dolly Parton’s songwriting legacy will live on long after she’s gone.
After all, fans will get to hear new music from the “I Will Always Love You” artist one more time, as she is already set to release a brand new, never-before-heard song—but there’s a catch: It’s not being released for another two decades.
Prior to her Aug. 25 death at the age of 80 following a “brief battle with cancer,” according to her team, Parton revealed in her 2020 memoir Songteller: My Life in Lyrics that she penned a song called “My Place In History” that she stored away in a time capsule held at her Dollywood theme park in Tennessee.
Since sharing the revelation, the 11-time Grammy winner joked that she may have had some regrets about the decision to keep the track hidden away until her 99th birthday in 2045.
“I had to write this song that nobody was going to hear ‘til then, and I tell you you have no idea how that has bothered me,” she said on the The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2022. “I want to go dig that up so bad.”
Emphasizing that “it's a really good song,” Parton quipped, “I don't know whose damn idea that was.”
Still, the “Jolene” singer knew she wrote the song for future audiences to enjoy.
“Hopefully it'll be special,” she added. “I have to honestly say, it was an odd feeling to be asked to write a song that was not going to be heard ‘til [2045]. But it's a good song.”
"I won’t be around to hear it,” she said at the time, telling Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that same year, "I’ll be dead and gone—well I might not be, 'cause I’ll be 99. You know me, I might still be hoppin’ around.”
But while Parton—who released 49 solo studio albums in her lifetime—was prolific for her songwriting, she was more proud of her Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library organization, which provides free books to kids.
"Of all the things I’ve done in my life—and it’s been a lot because I’ve been around a long time,” she said in her 2020 documentary The Library That Dolly Built, “this is one of the most precious things and the proudest I’ve been of any program I’ve ever been involved in, working with these kids."
Indeed, the 9 to 5 actress even shared which title she preferred among the many hats she wore.
"The book lady," she said on the Today show in 2019. "I have loved doing this for the kids. There's nothing more important than our little kids, to make an impression on them when they're young and to teach them the right things early on."

Swift shared that she's "so grateful" for all of her contributions.
"For the melodies and lyrics she wrote that thawed even the coldest hearts. For the millions of books she provided children all over the world so that they might fall in love with stories the way she did. For the tightropes she walked so that young girls like me could grow up dreaming of joining the circus too," the songwriter added. "Dolly, I’ll think of you each step of the way.”
“Dolly, you were the barometer. The North Star. Bold and brilliant. Talented and tenacious," Beyoncé wrote on her website Aug. 25. "You taught so many lessons on how to be uniquely oneself. I am grateful for your art, your heart, your generosity, your humor, your entrepreneurship."
She's espcially grateful they could work on a version of "Jolene" for Beyoncé's Grammy-winning album Cowboy Carter.
"I’m honored that I had the privilege to work with you," she continued. "I will treasure that forever. Thank you for your profound impact on the world. You are an angel who has made this world a happier place because of your joyful art. You are truly one of one. Rest peacefully.”
“One of my fondest memories with @dollyparton: Having a hoot and a holler while wearing Bob Mackie gowns on her show Dolly,” the TV icon posted to Instagram. “This girl from the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee dreamed a life and then lived a life bigger than she could have ever imagined, giving so generously to others in ways we saw and ways we didn’t.
“No one like her. She brought the light, and we are all better because she was here,” Winfrey continued. “God bless you, Dolly—you earned your wings.”
Parton’s 9 to 5 costar shared a heartfelt message for the singer and actress, writing in part, “I know that millions are mourning and I want to say this – more than anyone I have ever known, Dolly will always be with us because she was so present, so powerful, so generous and playful that she is woven into all our lives and hearts forever. We have our memories of her, her songs, Dollywood, '9to5,' the millions of books she got into the hands of children, all the iconic images that bring her to us. And they are all blessings. Let’s be grateful for all that she has left us to ease our sadness now.”
“To her gay and trans fans, I want you to know that she loved you. You know that without me telling you. She loved all her fans and they are legion. And you know she doesn’t want y’all to mourn now. “Well, I just got the news that my buddy Dolly passed onto the higher and greater side,” the country singer began in her tribute to Parton. “Dolly, thank you for all the wonderful things you did for us here on earth.”
“Your love, your music and you gave so much with your huge huge heart. There will never ever be another you,” she added alongside several photos of the two. “We will remember and cherish every memory and every note you ever played and sang. Thank you, Lord, for Dolly.”

“Dolly was a magical and joyous human,” Roberts shared of her Steel Magnolias costar in a statement to Variety. “I hold knowing her as a treasure in my life. The sun has dimmed today.”

The Kardashians star posted a series of tributes to Parton on her Instagram Story, including a look at her Dolly Parton-themed birthday party.
"Some people are so extraordinary, their existence feels almost impossible. Dolly was one of those people,” Kardashian wrote. “A once-in-a-lifetime soul. A woman whose light, heart, talent and humanity changed this world forever.”
She continued, “To have admired her was a gift. To have met her, spent time in her presence, and somehow been lucky enough that Dolly Parton knew my name... I will never have words big enough for what that means to me. What an astronomical human being. What a legacy. What a loss. There will never be another Dolly."
The “Stick Season” singer shared a sweet tribute to Parton on X, writing, “Rest peacefully Dolly, thank you for the joy and the music and the example you set for us all.”
“Dolly. This really really hurts,” the “Rainbow” singer posted to X, adding in a followup, “The world feels a lot less sparkly all of a sudden.”
“So glad she’s with her Carl Dean,” she continued, referencing Parton's late husband who died in March 2025. “No one talk to me today.”
