Hilary Duff will always remember the day of her first show at Madison Square Garden. Not only did the star welcome Good Charlotte to sing “The Anthem” with ex-boyfriend Joel Madden and his brother, Benji Madden, she also revealed during the set that her daughter had been in the emergency room that morning. In videos from the Wednesday night (Aug. 5) concert in New York City, the Lizzie McGuire alum asked fans to give the “warmest welcome to [her] friends” before the rockers joined her on stage, at which point she gave them hugs. A clip captured by Billboard that Good Charlotte shared on Instagram shows how the group proceeded to rock out to the band’s 2003 hit, which peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in the day.

“I don’t ever wanna be you/ Don’t wanna be just like you,” Duff, who sported a Good Charlotte T-shirt for the occasion, sang alongside Joel, both of them holding out their microphones to encourage the crowd to sing along. “Oh, what I’m saying is/ This is the anthem/ Throw all your hands up.”

The moment was many years in the making, as the singer-actress and Joel dated from 2004 to 2006. They’ve remained on friendly terms since the breakup, and Duff posed with husband Matthew Koma, the Madden brothers and Joel’s wife, reality star Nicole Richie, in a backstage photo at MSG that Good Charlotte shared Thursday morning (Aug. 6) on its Story.

At another point in her first of two back-to-back Lucky Me Tour dates at the NYC arena, Duff shared that she and Koma — a musician who helped his famous wife create her 2026 Billboard 200 No. 3 album, Luck… Or Something — had an unusual start to their day leading up to the concert. “We were in the ER this morning getting some stitches for my 5-year-old,” she told the crowd.

Duff noted that her daughter Mae — one of three girls she shares with Koma — is “fine” now. (The star is also mom to son Luca from her marriage to Mike Comrie.)

“It’s all good,” she added. “But it’s very ‘our family-coded’ that I would be playing my first show at MSG and also be in the emergency room getting my kid stitched up.”
