With the dust settled after frantic two nights of Emmy ceremonies where 102 categories were awarded, the 2026 field has been narrowed down heading into the main September 14 telecast.

Apple TV and HBO/HBO Max have positioned themselves as frontrunners with strong showing from multiple titles over nights 1 and 2, led by Widow’s Bay (8 wins) and DTF St. Louis (6), respectively, setting up a battle royale for the overall No.1 spot among platforms at the 2026 Emmys.

Heading into Night 3, Apple TV has 19 awards, followed by HBO/HBO Max with 16 and Netflix with 13. (Apple counts its Commercial win for 20 Emmys total.) Given the categories left for September 14, it is safe to predict that it will be either Apple TV or HBO/HBO Max on top — or both if they tie the way HBO Max and Netflix did last year with 30 wins each.

With only three long-form series categories — where Netflix’s Beef is a strong contender — remaining, the global streamer has no theoretical chance of catching up to its rivals. That is even if it sweeps all three — which is not a lock after the strong showing tonight for DTF St. Louis and the surprise casting win of FX’s Love Story — and even if it lands an upset win in another field, like Keri Russell for The Diplomat.

The top 4 most nominated programs this year are HBO Max’s The Pitt (25), HBO Max’s Hacks (24), Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay (19) and Apple TV’s Pluribus (18).

The four are expected to determine the 2026 Emmy Awards platform winner, with Apple TV having a slight edge on paper to finish first — outright or tied — for the first time in its history given its advantage after Night 2.

On the drama side, The Pitt remains the one to beat and a frontrunner for Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor (Noah Wyle) and Supporting Actor/Actress (Patrick Ball/Katherine LaNasa), poised to repeat in three of the four categories. The question is how many wins will Pluribus be able to walk away with. It has a strong chance with Rhea Seehorn in Lead Actress, where The Pitt does not compete, and may have an edge in writing and directing.

The Pitt repeated tonight as victor in the Casting for a Drama Series category, a relatively reliable predictor of the top Emmy series winners. Pluribus taking the big prize would certainly be considered an upset.

The race is even tighter on the comedy side. A late entrant whose last three episode didn’t even fit in the Emmy eligibility window, Widow’s Bay continues to surge, as evident by its No.1 finish among all programs after the first two Emmy ceremonies.

Like with The Pitt and Pluribus, Hacks and Widow’s Bay have the Lead Actress and Lead Actor races largely spoken for with Jean Smart and Mathew Rhys, respectively, as odds-on favorites and no competition from the other series.

For months, Hacks had been considered the clear frontrunner for Outstanding Comedy Series with its final season. Widow’s Bay‘s continuing momentum could change that. (Widow’s Bay also won the Casting for a Comedy Series Emmy, meaning that Hacks ended its run having never taken that trophy.)

The momentum is also making for a tight race in the Supporting Actress In a Comedy Series field between Widow’s Bay‘s Kate O’Flynn who, coming from behind, may edge out Hack’s Emmy winner Hannah Einbinder. The two shows also will battle over writing and directing, with Apple TV well positioned in the Supporting Actor In a Comedy series category with Shrinking‘s Harrison Ford and Widow’s Bay‘s Stephen Root.

Coming in with a deficit of 3 fewer Emmys than Apple TV (4 if you count Commercial), HBO Max will need a solid showing from Hacks and wins for drama and comedy writing/directing in order to come up on top.

The limited/anthology series categories also have tightened up following Emmys’ Night 1 and 2. With DTF St. Louis winning Supporting Actor and Actress, Writing and Directing for a Limited or Anthology or Movie while going head-to-head with Beef in each categoy, the second installment of Netflix’s anthology series is no longer considered a lock for the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

Beef‘s Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac remain frontrunners in the lead acting categories where DTF St. Louis did not submit. Then, there is FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, a surprise winner for Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

For more than two decades, all but two of the winners for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series (and its predecessors, Outstanding Limited Series, Miniseries, Miseries Or Movie) had also won the corresponding Casting category, including the last six years.

Love Story‘s sole win so far for casting could be an anomaly but the popular series should still be considered a dark horse for Lead Actress (Sarah Pidgeon) or even Limited or Anthology Series.
