Venus Williams is reflecting on her loss at the US Open.
The 46-year-old tennis pro lost to Sofia Kenin, 2-6, 6-7 in a match that actually did not begin until Monday (August 31) just a few minutes after the clock struck midnight.

“I would’ve preferred something else, definitely, I think it wasn’t great for either of us, we both tried our best, but yeah,” she said (via the NYT). “I just don’t know any other sport where you have to start that late. I definitely think there’s room for improvement there.”
Why Venus Williams’ match started so late
Earlier in the night, Novak Djokovic and Mariano Navone played in the first round, where Novak was eliminated.
The reason that Venus‘ match started so late was because the previous match lasted over 4 and a half hours.
Journalist Ben Rothenberg noted: “This Venus-Kenin match is setting a new record for latest EVER start to a U.S. Open match. The previous record was 12:08 a.m. for Sabalenka-Alexandrova in 2024. This match started at 12:13 by my clock. This is dysfunctional.”
