Werner Herzog enjoyed a warm welcome at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday as his Golden Lion Contender Bucking Fastard starring Kate and Rooney Mara world premiered in the Palazzo del Cinema’s Sala Grande.
The Maras play Jean and Joan Holbrooke, two eccentric sisters who are so close that they speak in unison, love the same man and have the same dreams.
They are joined in the cast by Orlando Bloom as an ex-lover who they harass after he ditches them for another women, and Domhnall Gleeson as a social worker who is drafted in to help them re-integrate into society after they land up in court for their actions.
Kate and Rooney Mara laughed and hugged as the lights came up on premiere and then closed in for a group hug with Bloom, with Herzog moving in for an embrace and pulling Gleeson into the group too.

Earlier in the day at the film’s press conference, the Maras said settling in their roles on set in Ireland had been relatively easy because of their sisterly bond.
“At first it was very daunting the idea that we were going to be kind of playing this same person, but I think we found pretty quickly that having a lifetime together and all this history and, you know, a childhood of playing together, there was just an unspoken world between us that we didn’t have to work very hard to create at all,” said Rooney Mara.
Deadline critic Damon Wise said the film inspired by real-life UK twins Freda and Greta Chaplin veers widely from their true story, and describing it as “a strangely tender portrait of two women trying, and failing, to find their place in life.”
“Though it appears to start with a tone of gentle mockery, Herzog’s picaresque yarn soon finds a surprising seam of compassion for the two sisters, whose idiosyncrasies walk the fine line between eccentric and irritating,” he wrote
