Although the Minions have served some of history and fiction’s ultimate baddies, even they draw the line at fascism.

Minions & Monsters co-writer/director Pierre Coffin, who also returns to voice the little yellow creatures, recently addressed a wild fan theory after 2015’s Minions revealed they served Napoleon in the 19th century, leading many to wonder where they were during World War II.

“I knew you were going to ask me that question. Shame on you,” Coffin teased Polygon at the thought of the Minions working for Adolf Hitler. “I think they were in that cave.”

Although the first Minions movie had them hibernating in a cave from 1812 to 1968, the interviewer noted that Minions & Monsters establishes that there are multiple tribes of Minions.

“I was trying to avoid the answer,” said Coffin, noting he’s fully aware of the online theories.

“So the Minions that we know from Minions 1 were stuck in the cave,” he added. “These ones, I don’t know where they were, but they were not part of the Big History.”

Minions & Monsters, now in theaters, finds the Minions in 1920s Hollywood, where they must save the world after unleashing monsters in their attempt to cast a monster movie. In the process, they team up with the green creature Goomi (Trey Parker).
