Minka Kelly tried to make Ransom Canyon‘s season 2 romance even more complicated by bringing her real-life boyfriend back into the story.
Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds surprised viewers during season 1 with a cameo as cattle buyer Billy Brinks. According to Minka, the creative team looked for a way to revive the character, potentially as another romantic option for Quinn.
“We tried to find a way to bring Billy Brinks back,” Minka told People in a new exclusive. “I was like, ‘Maybe the triangle is with Billy Brinks.’”
Minka previously revealed how Dan landed his surprise role and why acting made him unusually nervous.
The idea fell through because Dan‘s schedule did not allow.
“Sadly, he was unavailable,” Minka said. “He’s a little busy.”

The new season begins six months after Quinn left Ransom Canyon to pursue her dream of performing with the New York Philharmonic. She returns to Texas with a new boyfriend, Oliver, played by Ben Robson, only to find that Staten has become the funny and open partner she wanted him to be.
“She really wanted to move on,” the Friday Night Lights actress explained. “She was very frustrated at the end of season 1, and so she went to New York to fulfill her purpose and her dream to play with the New York Phil[harmonic], and she’s living in New York and having a good time.”

Minka has dated Dan since 2022. His original cameo came about after the show’s producers and writers met him during a set visit and “naturally fell in love with him.”
