Prime Video and Netflix are doing battle today at the Annecy animation fest with competing sessions in which they are talking up slates.
At the Amazon event, its first, a new trailer for Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 was unveiled, with the Bad Robot show set to premiere July 31. Watch it above.
A period piece set in the 1940s, Caped Crusader is a film noir-inspired reimagining of the Batman mythos, focusing on a young Bruce Wayne, voiced by Hamish Linklater, during the early stages of his crime-fighting career.
Prime Video also had news about Helluva Boss, with EP Vivienne Medrano sharing that the first part of Season 3 will premiere on Prime Video on October 14, while she showed the Annecy crowd an exclusive clip, seen below.
The other big news, which we have just revealed, is that Robert Kirkman’s Invincible has been renewed for a sixth season, drawing it level with BoJack Horseman as the longest-running animated series on a streamer.
Dave Wilson and Melissa Wolfe, Head of Animation at Prime Video, led the session alongside creatives like Kirkman and Medrano, discussing how they’re trying to transform beloved IP from comic books to crowdfunded hits into successful animated series.
The panel also shared upcoming animated titles in development such as Conan the Barbarian [working title], from Cartoon Network Studios, with an in-room message from Conan creator Genndy Tartakovsky and a new image.
Wytches, Lore Olympus and Odd Jobs were also on show at the Amazon session.
Wolfe described the studio panel as a “milestone.” “The announcements we shared today reflect the scale of our ambition. Renewing Invincible for a sixth season, bringing Batman: Caped Crusader back this summer, and developing bold new titles like Wytches and Lore Olympus are the kinds of stories that prove animation isn’t a genre, it’s a canvas. We’re building a home where the best creators in the world want to tell their biggest stories,”Melissa Wolfe, Head of Animation, Amazon MGM Studios
A similar Netflix slate session is also taking place today. Amazon and Netflix executives are out in force at Annecy this week.
