Christopher Nolan’s 2006 film The Prestige will be re-released in cinemas in January 2027, projected in a new 70mm film format.
Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson and Michael Caine starred in the psychological drama about two Victorian era magicians whose rivalry takes them to extreme ends. The film also featured a cameo from David Bowie as inventor Nikola Tesla, in one of his final film appearances. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the film will be blown up into the 70mm film format that Nolan prefers to show his films in.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan shared his excitement about the project. “I’m thrilled that they’re going to re-release The Prestige because it’s one of [Bale’s] most underrated performances,” he said. “I’m just really excited to bring it to fresh audiences. We’re actually going to do 70 millimetre blow-ups. Wally Pfister shot it anamorphically on 35 millimetre, and he did an incredible job.”
He continued: “I screened a 35 mil print the other day to check it, and his photography is just extraordinary. Nathan Crowley’s production design is amazing as well. So it’s going to look absolutely beautiful blown up to 70 millimetre, and we’re going to start that process in the next few weeks.”
The film will be re-released in cinemas on January 21 of next year.
Nolan is currently riding high with The Odyssey, which has enjoyed the biggest worldwide opening weekend of his career, as well as being the biggest opening weekend for a live-action film in 2026. The film, which features elements of horror in certain scenes, led the director to reveal that he would consider making an all-out horror movie in the future, as well as sharing which 2026 horror hit has inspired him.
