More than 20,000 Television Academy members have the final ballots in hand for the 78th Emmy Awards, with voting remaining open through Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 10 p.m. PT. When the envelopes begin opening — first during the two-night artisans ceremony, formerly known as the Creative Arts Emmys, on Sept. 5 and 6, and then during NBC’s Sept. 14 telecast from the Peacock Theater — some of the longest-standing records in Emmy history could fall.

HBO Max enters the final stretch as the most-nominated network, led by two of the year’s biggest contenders: reigning drama champion “The Pitt” and the fifth and final season of “Hacks.” But the night could produce history well beyond the top program races. Two actresses could tie the all-time record for acting wins on the same night. A limited series could accomplish something no program has done in the category’s history. The competition could produce just the fourth three-peat ever — or the first for a show celebrating its 50th season. And perhaps the most poignant possibility sits in guest actor in a comedy series, where Rob Reiner is nominated posthumously alongside Michael J. Fox. Either outcome would rewrite the record book.

Here’s a rundown of the records, milestones and fun facts among some of the nominees this year, category by category.
