Jonathan Van Ness is saying goodbye to one of his furry friends.
The Queer Eye star gave fans a "not fun pet and family update," explaining why he and husband Mark Peacock could no longer keep their adopted dog of four years George after a frightening incident involving their cat Liza Meownelli three weeks ago.
"Our beloved dog George had a situation with Liza where they were trying to cross each other on the stairs," Van Ness explained in a series of videos shared to Instagram June 26. "Liza was pissed, and she gave him a little swat, and then George just kind of freaked out and went for her.”
While Van Ness clarified the Australian Cattle Dog, Border Collie and Pitt Bull mix was "rough housing" rather than trying to bite, the dog still ended up breaking the cat's jaw.
"Until I got to Liza, and I saw what I knew was immediately a very broken jaw and just started scream-crying [and] howling for Mark," Van Ness recounted, noting that from there, "we got her to the emergency vet."

And when the feline headed into surgery, the haircare entrepreneur wasn't sure if Liza was going to make it. As Van Ness put it, “Thank God for the people at the Schwartzman Animal Hospital. They performed a literal miracle on her," adding that since Liza survived, they "weren't gonna be able to keep George."
“If you would've told me that morning that we were gonna be rehoming George that night, I would've said you were crazy," the 39-year-old continued. "All of the animals got along so well for the most part, and this just came completely out of the blue."
"Our theory on George is he just needs to be the only dog in the house," Van Ness said, emphasizing the beloved animal, who is now living with a foster family, is "such a good boy."
"Today's been really hard because I just am thinking about him so much," the reality host ended the emotional recap. "Pet stuff can be so much, so I'm just sending anybody who's been through pet stuff so much love."
The "gut-wrenching" incident follows an earlier rehoming experience for their pup Pablo, who Van Ness and Peacock sent to live on a farm with their dog trainer due to the dog's anxiety living in Van Ness' Austin, Texas, residence with several other pets.
"I used to judge people that ever had to re-home an animal, to be candid, but sometimes actually your home is not the best place for your dog," Van Ness expressed following the rehoming in a 2023 YouTube episode. "And sometimes it's actually really important for you as the dog parent to know what's the right home."
