Liam Gallagher has responded to England’s loss to Argentina at the World Cup semi-finals, saying that the team would have a better chance at winning if they could “run wild”.

England were left with their World Cup dreams shattered last night (Wednesday July 15) after suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Argentina in a dramatic match in Atlanta, Georgia.

Initially, Thomas Tuchel’s team seemed like they could secure the win and reach their first World Cup final since their victory in 1966, with Anthony Gordon scoring 55-minutes in. However, things soon turned around when Enzo Fernandez levelled the score with five-minutes left, before Lautaro Martinez secured Argentina’s victory with a header in the nine-minutes of stoppage-time.

Responding to England having their hopes of a World Cup win crushed last night, Liam Gallagher took to X/Twitter to share his “respect” for the team.

“Respect to the lads it’s nobody’s God given right to win the WC,” he wrote. “Congratulations to Argentina best team won onwards n sideways.”

He also shared his thoughts on what it would take to secure the trophy for the first time since 1966 – explaining that a more “wild” approach could help.

“England won’t win a WC until we get street wise and that goes for the managers [too],” he shared. “It’s all got too technical let the kids run wild.”

Since the match ended last night, Tuchel has been criticised for his substitutions in the second half and his tactics, although he said in an interview that he has “no regrets” about the approach used.

Liam Gallagher has been sharing his thoughts on the 2026 World Cup on X since things kicked off last month, and throughout the tournament the classic 1995 Oasis track ‘Wonderwall’ has become the unofficial soundtrack for the England team.

Following their wins against Croatia, DR Congo, Mexico, Norway and more, Harry Kane and co. have come together at the end of each match to sing it with fans in the crowd.

The Mexico celebrations saw Kane sing so loudly with fans that he briefly lost his voice, and it also saw Jordan Henderson injure his wrist in a freak accident while running to join the team as they sang.

Noel Gallagher quickly threw his support behind the track becoming England’s 2026 World Cup anthem, saying the song “belongs to the people”. He also quipped that he “couldn’t believe” that Jude Bellingham really knew the lyrics.

Liam also reacted to the news that ‘Wonderwall’ had seen a 50 per cent spike in streams on Spotify in the UK thanks to the World Cup, and added that he was prepared to fly out to New York stadium and sing the song live if England made it to the final.

Ahead of the game against Argentina, Liam also shared his high hopes for the England team, writing on X: “We’re winning this WC. I don’t know how, don’t care… you gotta make it happen.”

Now, England will play against France and compete for third-place on Saturday (July 18), before Argentina go head to head with Spain on Sunday (19) for the 2026 trophy.

At the final, there will be the first ever Super Bowl-style halftime show, organised by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, featuring performances from Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira and BTS.
