EXCLUSIVE: Hulu has landed Music Theories, a new comedy series from Michael Vlamis and Kyle Anderson, who are set to write and executive produce, with American Vandal‘s Dan Lagana aboard as executive producer and showrunner.

Hailing from studio Sony Pictures Television, Music Theories is billed as VH1 Behind the Music meets American Vandal, with its first season exploring the shocking true story behind Fountains of Wayne’s hit song “Stacey’s Mom.”

The project currently has a pilot script commitment from Hulu. Colin Davis will also exec produce, along with Jody Gerson & David Blackman for Polygram Entertainment.

Vlamis and Anderson previously wrote Blue Slide Park, a biopic on the late rapper Mac Miller that landed on the 2019 Black List. The duo also co-wrote Crossword, a psychological thriller directed by and starring Vlamis, which was a Staff Pick at the Austin Film Festival and will be released later this year. Vlamis earlier on starred in The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico for four seasons and will next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. He also recently appeared opposite Odessa A’zion in the coming-of-age film Pools from Sam Hayes, which won the Audience Award at SXSW Sydney, with Anderson also appearing in the film.

Best known for showrunning, exec producing and writing American Vandal, the Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning mockumentary for Netflix, Lagana most recently co-wrote and produced the TriStar family comedy The Breadwinner with Nate Bargatze. He also currently has Lifties, co-created with Jimmy Tatro, in development at HBO. Other past credits include co-writing and exec producing Rudy Mancuso’s Música for Amazon, plus co-creating and showrunning Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous for MTV.

Vlamis is represented by Artists First; Anderson by Entertainment 360; and Lagana by UTA, Paul Young Entertainment, and attorney Jeff Hynick at Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
