Bella Thorne Is Also Directing and Writing the ‘Spring Breakers’ Sequel She’s Starring In: ‘From Start to Finish, It’s Lit as F—’

Bella Thorne is about to go full “Spring Breakers.” The former Disney star has revealed that in addition to starring in an upcoming sequel to Harmony Korine’s 2012 cult classic, she’s also directing and writing the film.

Variety exclusively announced the sequel and its cast in May 2025, which also includes “Stranger Things” breakout Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin (“Zombies 2”) and True Whitaker (“I Love L.A.”). At the time, “Freeway” helmer Matthew Bright was attached to direct, but Thorne said in an interview on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast that she has now stepped into the director’s chair.

“The producers watched ‘Color Your Hurt,’ which is the movie that I just wrapped, an early cut of it. And they asked me to write something to see if they would like it,” Thorne said. “And they loved it! And now I’m writing and directing ‘Spring Breakers 2’!”

“Color Your Hurt” is Thorne’s directorial debut, described as a coming-of-age thriller that follows a young gay man seeking acceptance in a hostile community. Production wrapped on the film in October.

Asked how her sequel will differ from the original, Thorne said that 2012 was “such an exploitative time and everyone was going through it,” adding that herself and fellow Disney kids Miley Cyrus, Zendaya and Selena Gomez — the last of which starred in the original “Spring Breakers” — were all “being compared of who was going to be that next bad girl.”

“This time, things are different,” Thorne said. “They are crazy. There’s a lot of craziness, there’s a lot of litness. There is so much litness in this movie.”

She added that “Spring Breakers 2” involves some of the original team, including Muse Productions’ Chris Hanley (“American Psycho,” “The Virgin Suicides”) and Jordan Gertner (“Bully”). Korine is not involved, and has previously said he has “no interest” in the sequel.

“I don’t want to get in trouble, but what I can say is it is so litty, litty McTitties,” Thorne teased. “From start to finish, it’s lit as fuck. We are having fun. If you wanted to go to the theater and have fun, you’re going to have fun with this movie, that’s for sure.”
