Disney+ is making a version of strategy game Werewolves with Dutch broadcaster NPO.

Titled Wolven: Het Spel Van List En Bedrog in the Netherlands, the Traitors-esque strategy battle is based on the cult board game and takes place in a remote forest village, where a group of strangers known as Villagers compete to win a prize. Hidden amongst them are Werewolves, a secret set plotting to eliminate players one by one and steal the prize. Presenters are Pieter Derks and Soundos El Ahmadi.

The French original has found success on Canal+ in France and ARD in Germany. Disney+ and NPO are taking an innovative approach to releasing it in the formats hotbed of The Netherlands, where The Traitors originates. From August 29, the show from Banijay Benelux label SimpelZodiak will air on BNNVARA on NPO 1 and stream simultaneously on NPO Start and Disney+, with episodes dropping weekly.

Disney+ EMEA GM Karl Holmes said:”Wolven promises to be a great show, with lots of intrigue that keeps you guessing. It’s the kind of show you want to watch together, and we’re delighted to be bringing it to Disney+ audiences in the Netherlands. Together with NPO, we can help great local shows find new and younger audiences, while giving our customers more local stories to enjoy.”

Disney+ has been striking deals of this ilk over past months with European broadcasters. During one week in March, it revealed a pact with Spain’s RTVE that will see shows including MasterChef air on the streamer, and another with Rai that includes a famous local talkshow. Disney+ has made similar pacts with the UK’s ITV and Germany’s ZDF.

Wolven is created by Fary and Panayotis Pascot, owned by Jaad Productions and Presque Prod, and originally commissioned and broadcast by Canal+ in France. The format is represented worldwide by Studiocanal and Dreamspark, and forms part of Banijay Entertainment’s third-party portfolio, with the group leading adaptations across its international footprint (U.S., Australia & NZ, UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Nordics, The Netherlands, Israel, Mexico, Brazil, India).
