Mubi has acquired international rights to JAŸ-Z In 8, the forthcoming eight-part documentary series featuring the legendary rapper in conversation with veteran producer Rick Rubin.
Executive-produced by Shawn Carter (Jaÿ-Z) and Rubin, who also directs, two new episodes will debut on Mubi every Saturday, concluding with episodes seven and eight on Saturday, 10 October. The first two episodes drop on Saturday, 19 September.
The official synopsis reads: “In Rick Rubin’s directorial documentary debut, the series unfolds over many hours of candid conversation between two creative superstars. The career-spanning series closely studies the ingenuity of Jaÿ-Z’s lyrics as he breaks down his writing process and traces how his words reflect his childhood, the experiences that shaped him, and the evolving world he navigated as his career grew. As Jaÿ-Z guides us through the words and music that informed the work, he shows the deep, inextricable connection between art and life.”
The series was shot over two days in Paris. The footage was captured by Bradford Young (Selma). The international Mubi release will come just one day after the series debuts on HBO in the United States. HBO will release episodes every Friday, concluding on October 9.
Jaÿ-Z is coming off a busy summer. The New York rapper marked the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and the 25th anniversary of perhaps his most acclaimed project, The Blueprint, with a series of sold-out shows at Yankee Stadium. This autumn, he is taking the same live show international, with stadium shows in Paris and London. There has also been a swirl of internet rumors that Jaÿ-Z is prepping a new record, which would be his first drop since 2017’s 4:44. A new project would be his fourteenth studio album.
