EXCLUSIVE: Jean-Xavier De Lestrade’s record-breaking French thriller Sambre has found a U.S. home.
Babylon Berlin streamer MHz Choice has picked up Federation Studios’ six-ep limited series from the Oscar-winning filmmaker, which has already sold to the BBC and HBO Max in Europe.
Written and created by Alice Géraud and Marc Herpoux and based on Géraud’s book, Sambre is set in late 1980’s Northern France. It tracks an investigation after multiple women are sexually assaulted along the same road by the Sambre River, which has repercussions through to 2018 and the beginning of the #MeToo era.
Launching on MHz Choice on September 15, Sambre stars Alix Poisson (Sentimental Value, The Returned), Clémence Poesy (The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Tenet), Olivier Gourmet (Captain Marleau, Haven of Grace), Noémie Lvovsky (Camille Rewinds, Farewell, My Queen), Jonathan Turnbull (Soldiers) and Pauline Parigot (Soldiers, HPI).
On France 2, Sambre broke records with more than 4 million viewers per episode and another 3 million views online, along with nearly 6 million VoD plays.
De-Lestrade was behind hit show The Staircase and won an Oscar for documentary Murder on a Sunday Morning, about the Brenton Butler case in Florida.
“After crafting one of the true crime genre’s most defining works with The Staircase, Jean-Xavier De Lestrade has brought his journalistic sensibility and sharp storytelling to another standout with Sambre,” said Lance Schwulst, Executive Vice President, Content Strategy, MHz Choice. “Sambre is an engrossing series that has rightfully earned acclaim everywhere it’s been shown. We’re thankful to our partners at Federation Studios for giving us the opportunity to share this outstanding series with audiences in the U.S.”
Kino Lorber‘s MHz Choice airs the likes of Babylon Berlin, The Killing, The Bridge, A French Village, Erica, Reykjavík Fusion and Zorro.
Sambre was produced by What’s Up Films and Federation Studios in co-production with Versus Production.
