More than 27 years later, Lilly Wachowski has unplugged from the Matrix franchise that launched her and sister Lana’s filmmaking careers.

On Friday, Lilly shot down any speculation that she’d return to the directors chair for a fifth Matrix installment, noting that they “stick our noses in a tiny bit” with project in the works at Warner Bros. from Oscar-nominated writer Drew Goddard.

“Warner Bros., they wanna make another thing. They’re always gonna wanna make another thing,” she said on KCRW’s The Business. “Personally, I don’t wanna play in that sandbox anymore. I’m kinda done.”

Lilly added, “But there may be a thing that’s happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn’t wanna go forward unless he gets our blessing. And so, it becomes this complicated situation where, maybe we’re gonna stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel, and if we wanna pass on our blessing to Drew or not. So, it could be something that’s coming down the road, but it’s still unknown.”

After Lilly and Lana co-wrote and co-directed The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003), Lana flew solo in directing 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections.

In 2024, Deadline reported that Goddard was set to write and direct the next Matrix movie at Warner Bros., with Lana returning to executive produce.

Meanwhile, Lilly Wachowski is working on securing financing for her dystopian political thriller The Hunted, which will feature an all-trans cast.
