Julia Garner is opening up about her future in New York City…and as Madonna.

The 32-year-old Ozark alum got candid in a new cover story for Elle‘s October 2026 issue, out now on Elle.com and on newsstands on September 29.

During the conversation, Julia spoke about her desire to move back to New York City, her bond with the Queen of Pop, the status of the long-awaited biopic project, filming scenes with Madonna on The Studio, and her relationship with celebrity.

See the highlights from Julia Garner‘s Elle interview…

Julia, on why she wants to move back to New York City from Los Angeles:

“In New York, you have to think so fast that you’re forced to be present. Here, you don’t have a sense of time so much. The weather’s the same. There are no seasons. So you, like, daydream more…”

“Yeah, I think I’ll move back to New York. Anywhere except for Murray Hill. No shade against Murray Hill, but…shade against Murray Hill.”

On whether she’d like to talk about her separation from her husband of over six years, musician Mark Foster of Foster the People:

Julia politely declined to discuss the split when asked about it during the interview.

Julia, on filming with Madonna for The Studio and the status of playing her in the much-anticipated Madonna biopic:

“It was beyond! I always say it’s fine with the Italian queen! It was incredible. I’ve never had an experience like that. Food’s terrible, by the way. I had some of the worst Italian food in my life. But Venice is incredible.”

“She’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. Like actually. And people don’t know that.”

“I think the movie has to get made. But we’ll see….”

Julia, on wanting to be known for her acting, not her celebrity status:

“There are actors who aren’t even selective about what events they go to. I’m like, ‘How are you working and going to these events? I’m exhausted!’ Like, ‘Good on you, but I couldn’t do that.’ I want people to hire my acting, not me.”

Julia, on the self-doubt that comes with taking risks in every role:

“Every job I’m on, there always comes a point in the middle of shooting where I feel like I’m messing up. Like, I’m the worst actor. I feel like I stopped being good a few years ago. It’s like that on every job. So now I’m doing this radical acceptance, like, ‘Okay, the next job I’ll do, I’m probably gonna feel like that, and that’s okay…'”

Julia, on finding common ground with professional athletes over her approach to preparing for roles:

Draymond [Green] said he could watch an athlete on the court and know just from their body language when they tap out. And I can tell when people phone it in. For me, if I’m gonna do it half-a**, I’d rather just not do it.”

Julia, on what she hopes audiences take away from her performances:

“If I’m portraying that person, that’s not an act. It’s not my dialogue. But those are my emotions. Those are my feelings. I don’t need people to like my characters that I play. I need people to be willing to understand where my characters are coming from. I’m in the business of emotions and feelings and how I can make people feel less alone. That’s my job.”
