EXCLUSIVE: The leading trio of characters on MobLand will remain intact for the expected Season 3 of Paramount+‘s hit crime series. After some behind-the-scenes drama, Tom Hardy is staying on and will continue to star alongside Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, sources tell Deadline.

A month ago, Hardy was looking to be on his way out after friction between him and the series’ writer, executive producer and showrunner Jez Butterworth during production on Season 2 had escalated to a point where the two could no longer work together.

In the weeks since, there had been outreach that opened the door for Hardy to potentially continue on the show, with the actor also getting support from Mirren on social media.

The efforts culminated into a recent meeting in London between Hardy, Butterworth and series executive producer David Glasser, sources said. It went well, with the trio coming to a great understanding about a path forward, I hear. MobLand executive producer Guy Ritchie reportedly also was involved in the process of patching things up, which resulted in Hardy returning to the series full-time.

In the end, the show proved too big and too important to mess with the lead characters’ dynamic that had won over fans.

As Deadline has reported, a writers room for Season 3 of MobLand had opened ahead of the series’ Season 2 premiere. In light of the resolution, the new season is currently being written as centered on Hardy, Mirren and Brosnan’s characters Harry, Maeve and Conrad, respectively.

While not officially renewed, MobLand is expected to get an order for a third season. The crime drama was renewed for a second season last year after logging Paramount+’s second biggest launch for an original series behind Landman.

Hardy is believed to have had a three-year contract from the onset, so his return would be pretty straight-forward. When the behind-the-scene rift came to light last month, involving reported chronic lateness on Hardy’s part among other issues, production on Season 2 had been completed except for reshoots.

In addition to Butterworth, Ritchie and Glasser, the series’ executive producers include creator Ronan Bennett.

MobLand comes from Glasser’s 101 Studios and Paramount TV Studios. In it, two mob families clash in a war that threatens to topple empires and lives. The cast also includes Paddy Considine, Joanne Froggatt, Lara Pulver, Anson Boon, Mandeep Dhillon, Jasmine Jobson, Geoff Bell, Daniel Betts, Lisa Dwan and Emily Barber.
