EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MGM is eyeing a sequel to The Last Sunrise, its forthcoming film adaptation of the bestselling romance novel from the After series’ Anna Todd, multiple sources tell Deadline.
Reps for the studio declined comment. We’re told that screenwriter Anna Klassen has returned to pen the second film, based on a previously unannounced new novel by Todd, who will ultimately be putting out a book trilogy.
Sources stressed that there’s no guarantee the studio will greenlight a sequel. While unconfirmed, though, we’re told the intention is to make a series of three films, with all key creatives returning. We’re told the first film is expected to make its streaming debut in August.
Starring Maia Reficco, Fernando Lindez and Eva Longoria, The Last Sunrise follows 22-year-old Oriah “Ry” Pera (Reficco), whose life transforms during a summer in Majorca when she meets an infuriatingly charming local named Julián (Lindez). Between chronic health issues and her mother’s overprotective tendencies, Ry feels like she’s stuck waiting for her life to begin. When her mother’s job (Longoria) relocates them to Majorca, Ry sees this as her chance for a coming-of-age story. As the summer continues, Julián pulls Ry out of her shell and into the adventures she’s always craved, but with her return to America looming, Ry must decide if she’s brave enough to finally follow her heart.
Carlson Young took the helm here after directing Amazon’s chart-topping rom-com Upgraded, starring Camila Mendes and Archie Renaux, and has since then been tapped to direct their Christmas comedy Clashing Through the Snow. Todd produced alongside Ethea Entertainment’s Jennifer Gibgot and Andrew Panay, Lena Roklin from Luber Roklin Entertainment, and Brian Pitt from Pitt Street.
The Last Sunrise is one of the projects being feted at Obsessed Fest, a fan event highlighting the streamer’s commitment to YA fare, which is being put on by Amazon in Los Angeles on June 27. We were first to announce the film adaptation in the summer of 2025.
Anna Todd is best known for her After book series, which has sold over 12 million copies worldwide in 35 languages. The books’ popularity spurred Todd’s writing and producing of five films, which grossed $170M at the worldwide box office, despite launching out of the pandemic, and all went to #1 on Netflix.
Todd’s evolution from publishing phenomenon to filmmaker has most recently seen her produce Paramount’s adaptation of the Colleen Hoover bestseller Regretting You. She founded Frayed Pages Media to develop IP across film, television, and publishing, including the Frayed Pages x Wattpad Books imprint, in 2017. She is repped by Flavia Viotti of Bookcase Literary Agency.
Klassen has quickly emerged as a go-to writer for high-profile adaptations with a growing slate of bestselling novels set up across major studios. She is currently adapting the New York Times bestselling novel The Last Letter by Fourth Wing‘s Rebecca Yarros, which sold to Amazon in a five-studio bidding war with Imagine Entertainment producing. She’s also adapting NYT bestselling author Freida McFadden’s latest novel The Surrogate Mother for Sony and taking on the Anna Shilling novel All in Monte Carlo for Leonine Studios. Her studio work also includes A Time Lost for Netflix with Millie Bobby Brown attached to star, Dorothy & Alice for Netflix, and Raising the Dead for Fifth Season. Prior to her work in film, she was a trade journalist who carried bylines in Newsweek, The Daily Beast and Bustle. She is repped by Untitled Entertainment, CAA and Myman Greenspan.
