AMC and French broadcaster Canal+ are going with God after greenlighting the Point Break television series.
This comes after Deadline revealed in December that the Breaking Bad broadcaster was developing a series based on the iconic Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves surf heist thriller.
The series is set in the present day, over thirty years after the events of the film, and centered on a new heist crew with ties to the notorious Ex-Presidents gang, while the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them.
AMC and its sister streamer AMC+ will air the series in the U.S. and Canal+ will air it in France as well as on its pay service across Europe, Africa and Asia, while its sister distribution division Studiocanal will distribute it globally.
The show comes from Alcon Television Group, the TV arm of the film company behind the 1991 original.
Dave Kalstein, who has worked on shows including Amazon’s Butterfly, USA Network’s Treadstone and CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles, and Christopher C. Rogers, who has exec produced series including Apple’s Sugar and AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, will serve as co-showrunners.
The eight-part series will go into production early next year.
The original movie, which was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff, starred Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, who infiltrates the Ex-Presidents, a gang of Southern California surfers who rob banks. The Ex-Presidents, who wear masks of Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Lyndon B. Johnson and Lyndon Johnson, are led by Swayze’s Bodhi, and Utah gets swept up in their daredevil lifestyle before a massive action chase and a reunion amid lethal waves.
Kalstein and Rogers will exec produce alongside Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon Television Group head of television Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen, and Studiocanal’s M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert and Daniel Gratton. Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek, and Gene Hong will serve as co-executive producers, with Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook as supervising producers.
“Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about,” said Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios. “Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have created a story and characters that honor the legacy of the film and will bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world.”
“Point Break was the movie that rocked our worlds forever. It was this wild cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that struck our souls. As we got older, we realized it hit millions of people the same way. Point Break is more than just a movie—it’s a way of looking at the world. We are so honored to be carrying this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and Studiocanal. We’re putting together a series that will inspire audiences everywhere to seek The Ultimate,” added Kalstein and Rogers.
